Parkland ER Residency July 2014

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello,

Just wanted to let ya'll know Parkland has posted the ER residency for July 2014 if anyone is interested. :)

I haven't officially decided if I'm going to do ER or not:/. I'm really torn btwn coming back to Parkland for the ER Residency and going to UTSW for the med/surg Internship...unfortunately, I have no experience in the ER at Parkland bc we weren't allowed there as students in clinicals (even though all other rotations were at Parkland). Since trauma isn't included, I'm not sure about the experience. I know that there will never be any down time since the ER is always over flowing with patients. A lot of people that shouldn't be there too...pts are often angry bc they've waited forever to be seen. I just don't know if I want all that stress! Also, do you remember what they said about scheduling? Are new nurses automatically on nights in ER? I know I asked about scheduling, but can't remember what they said...I don't mind nights if there's a possibility of days after a year or so, but I feel like it was longer in ER. So much to think about...I have to decide tomorrow...thoughts??

Lol, a lot of thoughts! First thing, where do you want your career to be in the next 5 years? Also, what is your mentality? I was in SICU for a long time and I know that ER and SICU nurses are totally different. Different in their thinking, actions. I did 6 months on a medical unit at parkland-6 west when I first got out. It was ok, but I was already hooked on ICU nursing. I was not ER at that time in my thinking. Now, I have been a tactical EMT for the last 6 years and ER is where my head is and not SICU. Loved SICU but patients are there for days, weeks and sometimes months and others for 2-3 days. Parkland ER is probably one of the toughest units to be in. They average around 670 a day and more are coming. It is NOT all trauma with a lot of bloody noses, broken limbs, chest pain. So, what does your heart tell you? I know from my daughter who works up in CPICU that they need their residents to "survive" in ER because of the pace, stress, etc. from what I know of scheduling, the ER is unique. They are on a set schedule but you can switch with others. I totally expect nights and probably for a long time (1-2 years). I don't know what the chances are for days but I wasn't expecting anything like that initially. So, after all my rambling, I will ask again, what does your heart and head tell you? Be in the unit where you are happy and don't worry, it will be the RIGHT choice for YOU. I have had the same conversation with another on here and it is a big decision because of the LONG term commitment they are asking.

There is a trailer for the movie "code black" that is about la county ER and it is what I expect down at parkland-chaos but I LOVE it. I like the challenge, the variety. I admit, I am an addicted to the pace. Heck, i am in Afghanistan and we track down suicide bombers and kidnappers through cell phones! So, it will be a place you want to be. Am I nervous? Heck yeah! I am excited? Oh yeah! Can't wait, but you will be fine dfw after you figure out where you want to be!

DFWnurse2be what did you decide??

About half the residency will end up on days and half nights so there's a definite chance of getting what you want!

aloix14, i always expected to be nights, have no problem with that! have more of a problem getting up early!! definitely not a morning person!!!

Has anyone accepted a position for the Critical Care and Trauma Internship?

Can anyone give me tips on the ER residency interview like questions, and how is it currently in the program ? I would appreciate it.

If you look back in this thread, I describe my interview. I was offered the job, but turned it down bc I had already accepted a position at UTSW and felt that was a better fit for me:). Good luck!

There are nice apartments within walking distance of the hospital on Medical District Dr. @ Bengal or Cass.
