Mernah and nurse 0884, I am sorry you did not get it. I worked in that SICU and it was a great experience. I still know people there. If I can help with doing your interviews, please let me know. I was also Assistant unit manager for almost 5 years in SICU.

TWU80 - what kind of 'personality' would SICU be looking for? I truly believe that skills can be learned and I assume that during the interview they are mostly looking for if you will fit in with the crowd sorta thing. Any tips would be great! I interviewed with Parkland SICU residency this past December but sadly was not selected. I hope they give me another chance!
You are right, it is a "fit" they are looking for. The answers to their questions they are asking should come easy and with conviction, like you have been there before but need to learn more. Know everything you can about SICU and parkland. The type of patients, the multitasking, the working as a team concept. Pick up on their body language toward you and your answers. You should be excited, confident, eager but humble and basically telling them they would be crazy not to hire you.
Personal experiences are better than generic book answers. I still remember my first code as a senior in nursing school and my only thought was to make sure I did CPR correctly. I can still feel her bones breaking and I asked myself, could I have saved her? No, but it was defining me as this is what I wanted to be, the best that I can but striving to be better.

I have been offered parkland ER and have accepted! Love to know the others I will be in residency with! Will give you my face book page because we are going to be together for 16 weeks starting July 21st! Congrats to the others who got it and for those that didn't, DO NOT GIVE UP. I am always willing to help those new nurses that want to get that job they are searching for.
Congratulations TWU80!! You are going to do amazing!
I hope I can say that I am a Parkland nurse soon. I will try for the SICU residency and if that doesn't work out I will try for the fall residencies. Hopefully something comes up soon - I am so ready to start being a nurse!

I'm still waiting too!! Did you get an email or phone call??!! Congrats!!!!
Let me know about SICU, I did a total of 8 years there and always keep in contact with me about ER. we got to make you the next RN they have to have. Get personal with those answers, show them your passion, your personality but always realize you are there to learn and wiling to be flexible and take that criticism. I have been fortunate. I have done 2.5 years in Afghanistan, 22 years in federal law enforcement, an RN and a NREMT. This was still the toughest interview I have had to do. I was nervous, rambled and there's more I can say on how I prepared.
Thanks guys, very much appreciated. Got an email at 0806 central time from the hr lady. We start on July 21st.
