Parking Lot Code....

I just had to share my experience from this evening with you all! I was talking to my mom this evening and she invited me to come to dinner with them at Cracker Barrel, and since I wasn't doing anything, I figure why not? I met my family at Cracker Barrel and on the way in, I passed one of the guys I work with on the fire department there eating with his family. So we all said hi and went on our way to eat dinner. After they got done eating, in comes another girl I know from the fire department... she was working for a private ambulance that day, so they were their with their squad.

A few minutes later I see people running around in the parking lot and someone running with an ambu bag. My dad is a paramedic, so him and I jump up and run out to see what is going on and the guy I know from the fire department says "I don't think my grandma is breathing." It turns out she was in full arrest! We pulled her out of the car and one person started chest compressions while I was bagging. We ended up having her intubated and everything before the second ambulance got there.

It was just amazing to see how God had put us all in the right place at the right time to help her!! Going to Cracker Barrel was a spur of the moment choice for me and the people I know from the private ambulance had actually started out somewhere else, got toned out and then didn't feel like going back to the same place so they came to Cracker Barrel. Having the private ambulance there gave us access to all kinds of medical equipment and then with all of the trained staff there, we were able to intervene quickly.

I drove the family up to the hospital and the staff told me they had a heart rhythm back and were just trying to stabilize her. Things were looking good when I left. Even though I am an ICU nurse/EMT and I do things like that every day, it is just different when it is out in the community and you are not in your normal element. The family kept thanking us and apologizing for cutting our dinner short, but I told them, that if it was my grandma, I would want them to do the same thing.

As nurses, we are never truly "off duty", yes we may be off the clock, but we should always be available to help if the need arises.

Years ago my mother took a First Responder course at the local fire dept. when she started working for the school system. Shortly after completing the course we were driving through a rural area (we live in Massachusetts) and this older farmer was slumped over on his tractor while it was still in motion. My parents stopped the car and got out (I was about 6 then) and they stopped the tractor and my mother performed CPR while my father called for help. The ambulance arrived and took the farmer away, and he made out OK. I think it was a heart attack or something. Several weeks later at church, one of my classmates came up to my parents and thanked them because the farmer turned out to be her grandfather!

I was at the gym the other day, and saw a woman wearing a shirt that said, "I KNOW CPR" on the back in large block letters. Is it just me, or is that just begging the universe to drop someone right next to you?!

I made sure I knew where the defibrillators were at the gym after I saw her. Heh. :D

The worst part is she probably really doesn't know how to do it or she has only ever done it in class... :D

:yeah:very true. i wonder why people wear shirts that say "HI I'M A NURSE" or a license plate that saying "ERNURSE"... it's asking for some disaster to happen in front of you.

i seem to find myself in these situations too. car accidents ALWAYS happen right in front of me.

the last time i was at the doctor's office, a little old lady fell face first onto the pavement and when i drove by i was like "oh, crap" because she wasn't moving. thank god another nice man went inside to get some help and i was able to immobilize her and stop the bleeding from her head lac (she told me was on coumadin, yikes) until the ambulance got there.

and i was sleeping over one of my girlfriend's houses last year when she was 8 months pregnant to keep her company while her hubby was out of town when she said "man, i really have to poop"... and i was like, oh god, we're having a baby... and sure enough, her water broke in the driveway.

god truly does put us where we are for a reason.

LOL!

I went to paramedic class with a bunch of fellow college-aged coworkers...we were quite poor, and some of us had t-shirts made that said, "Will Do CPR for Food."

I am another *&^% magnet! lol. If I drive by an accident, and there are lights at the scene, I keep going as not to get in the way. HOWEVER, I was witness to a fresh head on collision on I95 that was just narley.......... so .... my hubby pulls over. I end up doing CPR on a dead woman who is trapped in the driver seat for over 15 min. while waiting for PM's because the poor old womans brother and two sisters (also trapped in the car) are begging me to "save their sister." Meanwhile the brother (also elderly) developed chest pain, the sister (elderly) develops chest pain. LOL. It was ugly. I give it up those Paramedics/EMT's who do this everyday in the field. It is exhausting-mentally and physically.
