OZ or US whisch is best??

Whats your thoughts please.;)

I have never lived in the US so I can't give an opinion but my partner is from the New England area and he's been here with me in Australia for almost 2 years. He can't wait to go back to the US, he thinks Australia has terrible customer service (we had issues with our ISP and the company we bought a $3500 computer from), goods are very overpriced and food is expensive.

I am a NZ RN and I have to say I enjoy working here. NZ conditions are awful compared with the working conditions in Australia. Pay is better here, patient load lighter, more equipment.

I guess it's all a matter of what suits different people, what their needs are and what they expect from their work and their surroundings. I have found it very difficult to make friends here, it's a small town, people are superficially friendly.

Unless you live somewhere you really don't know whether you will like it or not and other people's opinions may not reflect your values, likes and dislikes.

as i wrote before.... it's all a matter of perspective!

as for bad customer service in oz, i'm here to tell you, it ain't exactly award winning in the us either! granted, some places are inspirational and people could learn from those. but boy! some others............. ????????!!!!!!!!!

anyway, let's not get into country bashing, all places have their negatives and their positives! i loved what i saw in america! i hope to return for another visit. but, i don't wish to live there.

but i'm telling you.....................

australia really is the last paradise on earth!

but then, i just might be biased! and....... i make no apology for that! :)

Like most topics, if you ask a question here you'll get almost as many answers as there are people replying. You will also court controversy from those with directly opposing views!:lol2:

I truly feel that in the end only you will be able to make up your own mind because your needs, ideas, background, expectations etc will be different to others.

Personally I'd like to go anywhere except the UK but we have a house in Florida & we have friends there so that's where we want to escape to. I have had just about enough of the stealth taxes, the known taxes, the traffic etc, etc (I won't go on because most of you here have read my boring posts about why I want to leave the UK before!)

However, the stress of the USA application process makes me wish our house had been in Australia!!!

I don't see the USA through rose tinted glasses - we've been to & from the USA for over 20 years now & my best friend is a born & bred US citizen who has always been honest about the good, the bad & the ugly in her country.

What I will be getting - when we finally do get there - is a really lovely house, warmer weather, no mortgage (thanks to the ridiculously high London house prices), less lost (from a much better wage) in taxes & a more outdoor life for us all. I have no doubt that, should circumstances have been different, I could equally have said that about going to Australia!

Oh & Hi Grace! Nice to see you on another forum away from the "good morning thread!" I see you're still happily flying the flag for Australia & I don't see why you shouldn't. It's nice that you're proud of your country - I wish I was of mine. Although I have to say I think I'll always cheer England in the Football etc :wink2: Just don't tell G.W. Bush!!

I am also debating this at the moment, mainly due to the rpoblems associated with getting over to the states. At the moment I am a bank nurse so most agencies won't touch me with regards taking me on as i need to be working full time, and I'm not sure i can afford all the costs associated with going it alone, and although there are costs associated with going to Oz too it is a simpler process with no exams and there are various types of visas you can go over on varying from temporary ones to sponsosred and non-sponsored permanent residency ones.

You don't have to be working full time at all. I'm with Adevia & I work part time. The Board of Nursing where I licensed only requested 400 hours within the last 2 years or 900 in the last 5 years. That was easily covered by my part time hours.

I have a job offer & my I-140 is now pending. Being part-time has not caused any issues at all. I also got my VisaScreen through too so it's all down to how long retrogression lasts!

You do have to work full time once in the States though, at least until your contract is finished, in order to comply with the immigration/green card rules but you don't have to be full time here in the UK. As long as you work enough hours to fulfil the Board of nursing requirements in the USA to enable you to take your N-CLEX & get licensed, you'll be fine.

Having said all that, Oz is absolutely, without any doubt what-so-ever, a much easier & less stressful proposition!

Yes I can see that that might be viewed differently because your hours are not guaranteed.

I'm on a proper contract so it was not a problem.

Is there no way that you could get a permanent contract for the part time hours you want to work? Even if not being used for the USA you might find you need that for other countries too?

Well Thanks for replies, Let me share my experience with you.

Qualified in 1985 via the Army currently a Senior charge Nurse in the NHS,Having visited Florida many times with my Hubby and son we decided to try and move there in June this year.

We searched the internet and used Adevia as our agent and the process started we were advised to apply to Vermont for Licencesure and did this back in August(now this is where the fun begins!)-We kept checking our status on the web and various boxes were being ticked until eventually they all said yes,We tried to contact Vermont on several occasions to see what was happening but got no reply so we eventually contacted Adevia for help and the Vermont Board replied stating that they needed more info after many emails we were still none the wiser as to what they wanted and having forwarded copies to Adevia they couldnt tell me either and so the saga continues.

We were visiting friends in early December who are trying to go too OZ and said to us why didnt we do the same but having never visited before we were very unsure hence my posting WICH IS BEST.

We researched the net and found the process so simple compared to US and started the process in mid December and couldnt believe the speed and efficiency compared to the US,We emailed two hospital recruiters direct and supplied a detailed CV and was given details of a job by return (1/2 hr!!)and was put in touch with a ward manager who has been very helpful and keen,

She was going to do a phone interview and complete things over the phone however we have decided to go and see for ourselves leaving on the 3rd Feb and hopefully will return with a firm job contract and the SIMPLE visa application well under way.(pls feel free to pm me for more details)
