Overwhelmed and miserable at an LTC facility

Published

a month after I got my license which was this July, I was hired at a small ltc/rehab facility. I was happy because I have a job and I'm familiar with most people working there. When I was orientating though, I saw the state came twice in a week because of the complaints they received. I was so miserable and depressed when after orientation they put me to a unit I'm not so familiar and I dont even know how to do the paperworks. Now I want to quit because I was offered a job in a good facility. But, I am reluctant to do so because I am scared of what they would say to my mom's

friend who referred me to work there.

i would appreciate your thoughts on my current situation. Thank you so much guys. And I have always come here in AN because of the comfort you give to the members. :)

I graduated 3.5 years ago, and am on my fourth job. I worked in a nursing home for 2 months, which was absolutely horrible. I was miserable working there. I was unexpectedly offered a job at a LTACH with a new grad program, which was hard work, but much more rewarding. I changed to that job immediately. 6 months later, I was offered a position in an intermediate cardiac care unit. My aspiration was ICU, so I took that job. Just over a year ago, I received my penultimate job offer - medical ICU. I immediately accepted that job offer as well. Now I am in a position where I am happy, challenged, and learning so very much. I don't anticipate leaving here for years to come. Point is, I moved toward my goal and while I "job-hopped," each job was understanding that I wanted more of a challenge. Unfortunately, turnover is common in those places because the work is very hard with little respect. I think they come to realize that nurses won't necessarily work there long. They'll understand. Like you said, you need to work somewhere that will support your growth as a new nurse. You'll only be a stronger nurse for working in a challenging place.

People quit all the time. Having your mom's friend as a reference is not even an issue at all. Take the better job! Sometimes luck doesnt knock at your door twice.

Run while you still got the strength to do so,your Moms friend did not go to nursing school alongside you!

"..........you are afraid what they may say to your mom's friend, who put in a good word?"

does the facility appear to genuinely try and meet the residents needs...

any new grad new position will have unknowns, and anxious feelings.....resident safety and meeting needs are my main requirements..

best wishes, please keep us pisted

I would like to thank all of you who shared your thoughts and insights on my current situation. I feel I am

not alone because of you. :) I had a different expectation of the real world of nursing before and I did not expect LTC to be this hard. I was more of preparing my self to be a nurse in the hospital. And I was wrong, as a foreign graduate nurse, I should have researched more into LTC settings. I was hired by the other facility that I applied to. Now Im thinking Im going to resign from my other job. Do you have suggestions, tips and advice on how I could become a good nurse on a skilled nursing facility?

I don't think I am yet a good leader and I know I have to be firm but I cower when some people would raise their voice to me. Thank you so much for your responses I really2x appreciate them. :)

I really appreciate you sharing your experience with me. You seem to be a strong and a dedicated nurse. Would you mind sharing how were you able to apply to hospitals?

You have to do what is best for you! And for a new grad, it's pretty common to job hop in the beginning. Employers won't look badly upon a new graduate looking for your niche in a new career. Like others have said, make sure it is a solid job offer, and make sure you give proper notice. Life is to short to be miserable at your job! Hope it all works out for you...good luck!

I am in a similar situation with you except I have few options because I am a new grad nurse in a very saturated market for nurses in east coast. If you know of a better place to work then jump ship right away. I don't see why you can't...you do not owe the facility. If the ltc facility is so terrible then they should be thanking you for willing to work there. Move on and give proper notice. Good luck.
