Overwhelmed and miserable at an LTC facility

Published

a month after I got my license which was this July, I was hired at a small ltc/rehab facility. I was happy because I have a job and I'm familiar with most people working there. When I was orientating though, I saw the state came twice in a week because of the complaints they received. I was so miserable and depressed when after orientation they put me to a unit I'm not so familiar and I dont even know how to do the paperworks. Now I want to quit because I was offered a job in a good facility. But, I am reluctant to do so because I am scared of what they would say to my mom's

friend who referred me to work there.

i would appreciate your thoughts on my current situation. Thank you so much guys. And I have always come here in AN because of the comfort you give to the members. :)

Everyone's first job is usually stressful, but sometimes it can be a good learning experience. Also the grass might look greener at the other facility and it can be a lot worse once you are employed. Mediate and go with your gut. Good luck to you!

If you aren't happy and were offered a better position elsewhere, take it. You can't make career choices based on other people's feelings. Just be professional about your resignation and give them the proper amount of notice regarding quitting. Congratulations on the new position and good luck!

Thank you for your thoughts prettymica :) how would you know if a facility is well managed?

You might not ever know, nursing is a small world and don't burn your bridges.. Most companies do have reviews from former employees online. I often ask around to coworkers, someone always knows someone who has worked somewhere or worked there themselves.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I have been working at my job as per diem for just over two months now. Do you think it would be alright if I give yhem my resignation letter next month? I just don't want to risk my license. I wanna work in a facility where there's enough support for new grads like me.

Thanks for the advice. Do you think it is alright if I give them my resignation letter next month? Even though It's only two months since I started working there

I'm also a new grad myself! Whatever you do, make sure you follow their policy. If next month works best for you, then I say go for it. Make sure you account for the amount of time you need to give them in advance prior to quitting. So if they want a months notice, turn in your letter now.

When do you start your new job? Will the 2 jobs overlap and you'll be forced to work 2 jobs if you turn in your letter next month? If so are you okay with that?

Good luck!

Im so happy to find comfort from a new grad like you :) this new facility which hired me want me to start my orientation with them week after next. i am just working as a per diem nurse in my current job. So I think it won't overlap? Lol

then that should be fine! It would really suck, if not be impossible, to work 2 full time nursing jobs at once, haha.

You are welcome. You can give a resignation at anytime but please work out the resignation until the departure date. Hopefully you did not sign any contracts and I would make sure that you have a job already with an offer letter and start date before you leave. Nursing is flexible but companies do like to see stability and longevity on a resume. I hope that this place is better and remember you can always stay PRN just to have something to fall back on.

I would take the position. I am a med surg nurse but I work a day or so a week at a local LTC center. Wow, it is insane. No organization, bad management, short staffing, lack of supplies, etc.

I have to hand it to the nurses who work in that kind of environment on a full time basis. It's nuts!
