New overtime rules have passed the house and will now go to the Senate for a vote.
I was absolutely floored to see that this passed. There was more coverage on GWB's boo-boo in his speech and who they are going to try to BBQ versus the O.T. amendment. I was pleased to see that my congressman voted no. Ok, on to the senate...getting out pen and lot's of paper- I think I can still afford those items for now...LOL. Anyone loan me some stamps?
We all know, too, if one of these senators came into one of our agencies that they would be demanding of our time and attention. Would be great if they would come in to observe exactly what nursing entails. I wonder if they were in a situation that they needed us, or if their loved one had to wait for for any length of time for a treatment because of shift change (cant have overtime) if they would think twice about this bill.
re-read the above articles:
"the ana-supported amendment which was offered by congressman george miller (d-07-ca) and david obey (d-07-wi), would have barred the department of labor (dol) from spending money on new proposed regulations that would strip some workers including nurses of their eligibility for overtime pay,
a "no" vote meant that the representative was voting against adopting the amendment supporting the new wage law.
a "yes" vote meant the the representative was voting for adopting the amendment not accepting the new wage law.
need to work on those "no" congress persons and contact all senators.

IMO, I think what MIGHT help is to let your respective Senator know what you make and what you have to spend to maintain your household. This way they get a personalized view of how we NEED that OT instead of the generic averages from govmt statistics. I have a family of 5--3 of those 5 are teenagers with one going off to college this fall. I want my Senator to KNOW how this amendment is going to impact me and my ability to provide for my family.
I know that my Congressman, Vito Fossella, has heard from nurses on this issue. He's been contacted several times over the last 3 months. I dont know if he replied to any of the other nurses, but he never responded to my letters. He also didnt even bother to vote on the amendment which would have protected overtime pay.
If your Congressman voted NO on that amendment, it means he did NOT support protecting your overtime pay. Those are the ones to blast. The ones who voted YES on the amendment deserve a thank you note.
Do you have the site where we can go look how they voted???
Visit http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-bin/vote.exe?year=2003&rollnumber=351 to find out how your member of Congress voted.

:(
grrrrrrrrr. Of course, I will write my senator, but he's a republican and very very probusiness. After this passing the house, I see no reason why it wouldn't pass the Senate. I hope I am just being a cynic. I am prepping myself for the upcoming changes.
Most people still don't have a clue. Can you believe that?

Thanks for posting those links, NRSKarenRN. Drafting letters to my congressmen has never been a strong point, so I appreciate when it's made easier for me :)
*sigh* This overtime issue is so ridiculous, when has taking money away from workers ever helped the economy?
