I agree jt. It will totally worsen the nursing shortage but it will hurt lots of other professions as well. It will definitely decrease consumer spending; lots of people work overtime to buy those nice little extras.

Yes ma'am, it will! It just amazes me that the DOL didn't do, or didn't look at, a feesibilty study on the economic impact that this will have on business, large and small. Middle class America IS the backbone of this country and if they take our money away it WILL impact retail business and eventually the global market. You know what would be a nice message to the DOL? Ask middle class America to not spend extra $$ for one week, just buy the necessities, and let them see how the retail market responds. Retail took a bad hit after 9/11 when people stayed home out of fear. Do they remember? Apparently not.

OK... Here is the letter I sent to my Senators. Don't know if it will help...

"A bill recently passed in the House regarding overtime. I am a member of a group of people that was included in those that should be excempt from being eligble for overtime.

I am a NURSE. A professional by education, however, skilled labor by the job tasks I perform. Part of my job description includes being able to do a list of physical jobs that could injure and/or permanently disable me at any given time. I am the front line worker who is the buffer between the patient and the management. I am scrutinized by the very people I am trying to help and given little praise for doing a job well.I am a NURSE.

I work on a floor where the nurse to patient ratio is 1 to 8. It's 2 AM and i have been home for maybe 30 minutes. I should have gotten off at 11PM but because of circumstances beyond my control, I didn't. A patient (a voter) died. It took the entire staff of 6 on the floor with 32 patients and 4 other people to get the patient out of the chair and back into bed to be able to perform CPR on him. 31 other patients didn't have their needs met because we were busy. Our one saving grace was knowing we would get paid to stay over to make sure their needs were met even if they were late. Now the grace is threatened.

I beg of you as a receiver and provider of healthcare services, DO NOT vote in favor or the bill. Maybe an ammendment to the bill to include an organizational chart as to what level of care provided to patients could be eligble for overtime.

Respectfully:

Margaret, RNC"

bill to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to change the job description and duties, income limits and other qualifications for overtime pay protections. click on the bill numbers at:

Thanks for the link, it really helps when writing my Congressmen to know what I'm talking about. It's best to include the name of the bill when writing them or they may not pay attention to exactly what you are talking about. If they may not know what bill you are referring to since they go over so many different bills every day.

isn;t it funny how supply side economics seems to be the order of the day? uh, that ain;t where the shortage is, boys! he's harkening back to reagan;s voodoo economics . what does he think this will accomplish? i mean, i am without a degree in economics or law or history, i am wholly without political experience and even i know better. what is he really trying to pull here? :confused: won;t this aggravate the problem rather than solve it?

p.s. sorry for the typos. i am trying to get used to this new keyboard.... :imbar

On another note, and some what related;

As a woman, I only make .78 cents for every dollar a male worker makes. Now, they are taking away my ability to play catch-up and make more money by taking away over-time pay.

I say that all women should only have to pay 78% of taxes they owe the government instead of their full 100% share. Until the government can make it a fair playing field where I make as much as a man, they shouldn't expect to get 100% of my taxes.

OK, sorry, I just had to vent.

Found some info on all the bills that they are trying to push through regarding O.T. WARNING- make sure you have a barf bag available and the address to your representatives:
