Over reacting Principals

Hello fellow school nurses. The parents at my school has the Principal and Vice Principal on pins and needles and scared senseless. It's like any student that comes in my office to see me about anything, the Principal and Vice Principal is always at my door panicking. I mean it's ok to check on students but they do toooooo much:sarcastic:. I can be in the process of asking students question (doing my assessment) or just about to call mom or dad when the Principal and Vice Principal pops out of nowhere. Does anyone else Principals react like this. I just want to do my job:down:

We have two Principals. One is here day to day and is involved with students. She leaves me to work. The other does fundraising and community presence, he is always inquiring about students that see me when he is in the building. Those times are few and I don't mind, I know his "thing" is to be able to show parents that we are that involved with their children. Private school problem/ issue.

I remember the principal telling me at my interview "The reason we hire a nurse is so that the teachers can teach, the students can learn, and administration can do their jobs". That is how is should be, not what you are describing. My guess is either something has happened recently or even in the past where a parent threatened to sue or something, or your school has an unusually high number of helicopter parents and you are stuck with micromanaging administration. That blows :(

Exactly you said a mouth full thanks

I'm usually left alone which I prefer. I occasionally see the principal every once and awhile. And sometimes when she stops in, I get a little nervous, feeling like a student myself! The principal is a Nun and not a very nice one either! I always joke about how I bet she was one of those "ruler hitting" Nuns back in the day. Whenever I need her for something, she is never around or always in a meeting. And the days when I do catch her, she seems irritated and annoyed. Hey lady, just doing my job! Not my fault that you like to let students in without immunizations and I repeatedly hound the parents until the health inspector comes and wants to immediately speak to you! That was a fun day!

Exactly I just want to do my job and be left alone also because I'm sure I know what I'm doing

during my interview, in front of the vice principal, the superintendent, athletic director and current nurse..the principal asked me... when do you let me know things?" in other words, he says when will you tell me when something is going on?...I took a few seconds before I blurted out..." when I need your help". " I am a licensed professional whom you have to trust". and to this day when I need him or my vice..I do not hesitate to call either one and they are at my side within seconds, whether it is for an extra set of hands or for an irate parent and need a witness...they have my back and I have theirs

I am pretty much left alone but I do have my principal and AP support when I need it. I feel really fortunate - my principal is really a good one (at least to me - some teaching staff may not think so - LOL) when parent issues arise he always tries to find out the facts before dealing with them, always willing to listen to my side, will totally support me when needed and is reasonable if we disagree about handling an issue.

I feel your pain.

My current principal is very needy and creates panic before the situation warrants it. I'm pretty sure her "retiring" at the end of this year is directly related to a situation that occurred between us where she overstepped her role as admin into my world of nursing and made the wrong call. In her defense, my school has rotated through many nurses in recent years, one of which who gave insulin to a staff member by accident and the district was sued (teacher still works here and thankfully respects and likes me). So I also have parents who will come in ranting about everything because there isn't complete trust yet.

Maybe ask them if they would want to do a weekly meeting with you, so you can update them on the smaller things going on in the health office and they can give you any extra info (they usually know before I do if there is a change in the home environment). And just reassure them that in emergencies and injures related to school equipment, they will be called and informed.

Um.... How on Earth did this happen??

Um.... How on Earth did this happen??

From what I have been told, she was administering flu shots at the same time as when her diabetic comes in and she had predrawn that dose and grabbed the wrong syringe.

Still. That is gross negligence. Insulin is drawn up in a sub-q syringe and a flu shot is in an IM syringe. I don't see how they could be confused. Hopefully this nurse learned an important lesson that day.
