Outside of Nursing..

Published

Hey everyone. I'm just curious for all you nurses out there, what else do you do outside of Nursing? Are you into business? Owning real estate, or managing side projects? Do you strictly work as a nurse, and it fulfills everything you want? Are you a family oriented person?

Do you own any dogs? What kind of lifestyle do you have? Do you find that your career as a Nurse drains a lot of your energy where you don't have the time or energy to focus on other things?

I'm planning to get my ADN, and right afterwards work on my BSN. At the same time I also want to start building some capital for some business ventures. Honestly, I don't want any children until I'm at least 35 years old. I am 23 right now. Just curious as to what other plans you all have outside of Nursing. Or maybe even within Nursing, as in aiming for your PhD or something similar..

You'll find that a lot of the nurses here are not limited to their profession.

There are bloggers, foodies, runners, travelers, hikers, you name it.

My question was not "Do Nurses have a life outside of their career." I was wondering what other projects that more ambitious nurses have and are currently working on. For example, my coworker wants a simple life. He wants to work as a Nurse, move down to Georgia and own a house with a nice garden and that's it. He doesn't need or want anything else. I also know another Nurse who runs an outdoor electrician company with his colleagues. I know another Nurse that is currently working on their NP license. I know another Nurse working on her CRNA. Some people are satisfied with having only one career. Some people want more than just one.

One career is enough for me. I work to live, I don't live to work.

Specializes in Hospice.

^^^^This. Completely.

I'm on the downside of my career, I don't need anything else on my plate.

Whatever I feel like doing. Today, watching the Patriots game at a bar and drinking pumpkin beer.

Are you into business?

No

Owning real estate, or managing side projects?

I own my home but that's about it.

Do you strictly work as a nurse, and it fulfills everything you want?

It is my job. It is not meant to "fulfill everything I want". It pays the bills.

Are you a family oriented person?

No. I do not want kids. My family lives 45 minutes away. I see my mother ~ once/month, my brothers 2-3 times/year.

Do you own any dogs?

No. I am never home to take care of a dog.

What kind of lifestyle do you have?

Busy. I have something that I do almost every weeknight. This weekend was the first weekend since July that I was in town.

Do you find that your career as a Nurse drains a lot of your energy where you don't have the time or energy to focus on other things?

No. See above.

Specializes in WOC, Hospice, Home Health.

I have a husband, I have small kids, I have a dog. I'm busy right now with a bunch of home improvement projects. I'd like to make more time for fitness and running. I like to cook and I like to travel. I enjoy my job but it doesn't fulfill me...my job isn't my life.

My life is very full right now. I find many friends my age (early 30s) feel the same way regardless of their fields.

In my 20's prior to my daughter, DH and I traveled a lot. Cruised a lot. It was awesome.

Now that we're old and tired and parenting a pre-teen, hubby travels with work 99.9% of the time and I find myself single-parenting, I've found that my hobbies include crashing on the couch, snacking, and catching up on the latest "Real Housewives" franchise.

THat's awesome, at what age did you begin your family?

OP I love this post!! Good for you in wanting to have a little something on the side. The best advice I could give you is to go for it. Be able to take care of yourself. Do not allow anyone to co-mingle your finances and be in a place where you can be independent if you want to.

I love highly motivated kids!! Your parents I am sure are so proud of you! So....invest wisely, create your own life, and do whatever the mood strikes you to do.

Best wishes

(and oh, I have been married and with kids my entire adult life. Wouldn't change a thing. I do a little EMT on the side to mix it up a bit. Do some writing. Crafting here and there. And I have embraced my kindle for my book addiction.....)

I have no children, never really had the desire to have any.

I'm currently taking a course and counting the months until my trip to Thailand. I've traveled a lot before I was a nurse. If I had the means, I would work casual and travel.

I'm another one who works to live. There are many other hobbies I could find to occupy my time.

Specializes in Psych, Addictions, SOL (Student of Life).

What do I do when I'm not nursing? Let's see. My husband and I are currently refurbishing a cabin by a nice little lake. Not sure yet if we are going to sell it or keep we'll let property values be our guide. I am into gardening and cooking and keep a year round vegetable garden which can be done on California. I am also an gourmet cook. I am working on one work of fiction and one nutrition book. Both those projects are on the shelf as I am completing my BSN. We have a son getting ready to launce off into high school.
