How many of y'all are assigned clinical sites that in another town? Last semester, our program only offered one LTC facility for first semester that was in town. This semester, the one I will be starting, doesn't offer any in town.
There are 2 that are located in a town 29 miles away, and another that is 19 miles away. I know it doesn't seem bad but that is 35 mins to get to the first one and 25 mins for the second one. It seems like in a city of 40k people, our school would have been able to secure a clinical agreement with one of the dozen LTC facilities in this city.
That gas is going to get expensive on top of commuting to class 4 days a week. We have clinicals twice a week.
Our school is right next to the towns two hospitals, which is a plus, because we will be doing some of our clinicals there. I have heard of people being sent to a site up to an hour away, but I havent heard of anything else. I have heard of some nursing programs sending students so far away that they needed to get a hotel for the night, which is just awful.
my first semester i drove 35 mins to get there, now i drive 20 mins. really it is what it is and the commute eliminated some of the students who couldnt make it to clinicals at 7am. however, if you did all the clinicals at the same site then it doesnt give much diversity if your trying to get hired near the college you attend.
I think the rural branch of my school is kind of out of luck with their clinical agreements. Also, you have to look at the quality and competition. If the clinical site will not allow students to do anything, is it worth going there? What if there are a schools that already have agreements? I wouldn't want my family members to be harassed daily in a LTC. Maybe once a week but having a bunch of different students could be too much.
I don't know where I'll be doing clinicals yet, but my school says they can be within a 45 mile radius... yikes. I'm kind of nervous because I don't even have my driver's license yet. My road test is in September, so hopefully that will be in enough time! Not sure yet when clinicals start. I find this all out Tuesday at orientation. Anyway, until then, my dad could give me a ride, albeit embarrassing as that is, or I could carpool, I guess.

This is very common. You go to clinicals where you are placed. 40K people is a rather small city. I went to school in/live in a city of over 600K and we still had to leave the city for certain clinical placements. 25-35 minutes is an easy commute.
First semester was about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic once per week in a clinical in which we did very little. Second semester was about 20 twice per week (clinical prep the night before) on a unit were it was very clear that we were not wanted. This fall will be 30-45 minutes 3x per week. Hopefully this semester and the decision to go to a different hospital than this spring will pay off with a better clinical experience.
I haven't gotten my clinical assignment yet, but I'm hoping it's in town because I don't have my license (I just passed my knowledge test friday). And even when I get my license, I won't have a car. So I'm relying on the bus and rides from my parents. If I get the morning clinical, then I'll have to get a ride there and then take the bus back. If I get the evening clinical, then I'll have to take the bus there and get a ride back. Thank goodness the only hospitals they put us in are pretty close.
My first semester, I had to travel 30mins to another town, my 2nd semester had to travel 40 mins to another town but it took me 20mins to get there and now in my last semester, I have to travel 30mins to another town but it takes me 20mins to get there. The ride really isnt that bad, theres no traffic, and my car burns a quater of a tank of gas for traveling those three days which isnt bad at all. My junior 3rd semester was the only semester where my clinicals were in,my town and close by

I have been blessed enough to not have to commute at all for my clinical until now. I am thinking I am going to have to travel to an area about 30 minutes away for OB. Not looking forward to it. I usually have to be there at 6:30 am.! Before I moved to my campus, I had to commute an hour once a week to go to clinical. Needless to say, I was always sleep deprived from care plans and anxiousness to be on time, so I did not rest well at all. My past two semesters, my AH clinicals have been 8 hours long. Mental health about 4 hours.
