Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?

Published

Hi all,

I'm brand new to this forum. Who else has applied to SSU's pre-licensure BSN program? The anticipation is killing me! ;) Does anyone know whether the overall G.P.A minimum of 3.0 applies to the last 60 units of college work only? I definitely meet that, but had a mediocre grades stint back in the 1990s, when I got my BA. (I'm an older student at 40.)

Good luck to everyone applying to nursing schools right now. I was accepted to Dominican University, but getting into their nursing program is separate, and one must stay enrolled to eventually get in.

Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure the 3.0 overall GPA includes all your units taken. That's what the transfer specialist at SSU told me. Because of that I decided not to apply as I too have a checker past from my early college years (I'm 38).

I was also accepted to Dominican this spring and can start my clinical next Spring. I enrolled in a 1 unit class but I'm not sure if I'm going to follow through with my admission. I have mixed feeling due to the tuition. For a 3 year program I'd be shelling out way over 90,000. It just feels like too much at my age. How are you feeling about it?

Hi mswtruth,

I understand what you mean about the cost of private school. I want to keep all options open, but I don't think I can get enough loans to cover the private tuition.

I probably sound silly asking about the 3.0 overall requirement, but I could swear that about two years ago when I started my nursing pre-requisites, someone at SSU said they count back 60 units for overall GPA. However, I've called so many schools that I may be mistaken. Or perhaps they thought I was asking about transferring to the university and not specifically the nursing program.

In any case, I really want to go to SSU, but I understand that a lot of other people do, and the competition is tough.

Which programs did you apply to? I applied to SSU, Dominican and SRJC. Good luck to you, and thanks for the post. :)

I applied to SRJC, Dominican, CSUEB, CCSF and COM. COM is my top choice since I live in Larkspur. If I get into COM or SRJC I plan on doing the SSU BSN bridge program. Good luck to us both! The wait is excruciating!

The last 60 units only applies if you're a second bacc student (which it appears you are). Did you attend an info session? I think they're done for this cycle right now, but you can e-mail the nursing department with questions if needed.

I'm about to graduate from the SSU prelicensure program, so feel free to ask any questions you may have! I don't think you have enough posts for a PM, but I'll try to keep an eye on this thread. :)

Good luck! Notifications should be coming any day now!!

Thanks, RunBabyRun, for the clarification on the units. (Yes, I'm a second bacc student.)

Also, congrats on your upcoming graduation! I bet you are super excited. :) What are your thoughts on the program overall?

I really, really, REALLY want in, but realize that there's only about a 1/8 chance of me getting in. I'm picturing it happening in my head, although I doubt that will help. ;) I heard that mostly everyone has a 4.0 or near that on the sciences, and although my GPA in the past couple years overall is 3.71, I got a B not only in anat, but in physio too, which I took over the summer. 90.7% on teas attempt 1 and two strong essays, because I'm a former newspaper reporter. But, the waiting and probable rejection is making me grouchy!

What are your plans after graduation?? Very exciting stuff!

Hey mswtruth!

You were smart to apply to so many places. I only applied to those nearby three since I live in Santa Rosa. The hubs works in SR, so I need to think of the miles I'll be putting in every day.

Good luck to you! That would be cool if we both got into the same program and got to meet each other.

Question: How long ago did you take anat and physio/micro, etc? I need to re-read my physio book this summer. I took micro in fall '13, physio last summer, and anat the previous year. I've put on like 15 stress pounds in the last two years! I'd better get in shape for nursing school, because I have a feeling I will be doing more stress eating there than for the prerequisites! ;)

Good luck for the notifications; I will think positive thoughts for us both.

Thank you! I am SOOO excited to finally be graduating.

I have enjoyed the program overall. It has its shortcomings, as I imagine most programs do. We are only the second class that's in the 2-year cycle (rather than 2 1/2 or 3 years), so there are still kinks being worked out. The instructors are extremely supportive, and there's no "thinning of the herd" mentality- we have 23 left of the original 24, and the one who didn't make it had some personal stuff going on and has since chosen another path. One observation that I know many of us have mentioned to the department is the lack of skills lab time. We generally have one skills day (4 hours) before a rotation, and everything else you learn with your instructor or nurse in the hospital.

I have a job offer where I am precepting for when I am licensed. I am trying to figure out the time in between (aside from studying for the NCLEX), as there is a long delay with the BRN right now. I've been applying for jobs like crazy. I have classmates looking all over the state and the country looking for work (one had an interview in Tennessee!), and I just don't have that luxury. I am, however, looking as far away as the South Bay, as the position I was offered is per diem, and I can't necessarily count on hours.

Sounds like you may be competitive! Hopefully you'll have some good news soon. Be sure to post when you find out! I know the stress is AWFUL, especially when you CAN'T apply far away.

Hi all I also applied to SSU. Good luck to all of you! I applied to SSU, Sac, Chico, East bay, SRJC, and Mendo. The waiting game continues.

Tall4 -

I took all my pre-reqs this past year 2013. Chemistry in spring, micro summer and anatomy, physio and stats last fall. Got B+ in all but anatomy and physiology both A's. I feel very up to date on all the info. Took the TEAS already scored an 84% without much studying...wasn't too bad but if I had studied I could have done better. Been a stressful year. Let's hope it pays off!

Wow, mswtruth, you have had a tough year! You've got some solid stats and I'll be thinking good thoughts for us, and for caligirl7. I really don't like waiting, but I also am afraid of getting the (probable) rejection email from SSU. There's just so much competition. I wonder how long we will have to wait for our answers. I know that SRJC doesn't inform us until about June.

Thank you Tall4! Fingers crossed for all of us. It's almost April, we are getting closer and closer. I feel more nervous now compared to when I was initially nervous sending out my applications. The decisions will be what get my nerves going strong.
