OSU OKC Spring 2014

U.S.A. Oklahoma

I wanted to start this thread for all of the OSU OKC Spring 2014 applicants. I turned in my application yesterday and I can not wait for letters to go out! I am new to allnurses (but not to OSU OKC) and was hoping to share some of my excitement and anticipation with some other OSU OKC Spring 2014 hopefuls!

RNStudent- Do we have to buy the scrub bottoms from the bookstore or do you just suggest it? I'm sure people will answer our questions at orientation but I wanted to get them before that.

Oh goodness no, actually I bought mine from Walmart because they were cheaper but now since I'm an aide and have a fondness for black I wear whichever ones are clean  It doesn't matter what brand as long as they are black but as he posted before me I suggest ones with lots of pockets. I actually like scrub top pockets better since its more accessible for me to just reach down in my scrub top and grab a pen or whatever, but its always good to have more than enough pockets. That's why I said get another brand scrub top too, the pocket issue. I would actually try to avoid the bookstore altogether, its overpriced. I even bought all my books on Amazon. I saved about 200 bucks.

I talked to a woman at the book store and she said we had to get the tops because it has a OSU logo but we can get any pants. Does she know what she is talking about?

The Uniform Store on May gives 15% off all regular times to students. The outlet also has good deals on scrub bottoms. Get them quick though. They told me that a lot of hospitals are going to all black scrubs so there may be a shortage. I got all my scrub bottoms from Uniform Store on May. I got some super ugly all black shoes from Payless. I figured that I won't wear all white or black shoes after school so why spend a bunch of money on them. I haven't found OSU orange tops yet.

Also the nursing store or scrubs store at quail springs mall give 15% off to OSU OKC students.

I have many classmates with tops not bought from the bookstore...the orange is brighter and they bought the patches separately. I'll have to ask what brand they got.

I bet it would be better to ask the nursing secretary, Kathleen, instead of the lady at the bookstore. I'll send her an e-mail.

Per Kathleen: "It is my understanding that the scrub tops are sold exclusively at the bookstore, due to the orange color being a color specific to OSU. The pants can be purchased elsewhere but have to be of the same style and design as the ones in the bookstore. Same for the lab coat."

It sounds like we are stuck with the bookstore scrub top, at least for the first semester. Darn.

Well, I would do the same thing and follow what they say. But after first semester, the design of the pants and top aren't of much concern to the instructors as long as they have the patches. Glad you found out though!

RNStudentJ- Do they require your shoes to be all leather and all white? Do you recommend any specific types of shoes? I just don't want to get a pair and not be able to use them.

They have to be solid white or black. They used to have us just wear white shoes but they changed it, thank goodness because the all white shoes looked really dumb with orange and black. I don't think it matters the type of material as long as it isn't all mesh since that is a safety concern. I really love Danskos, but they are expensive. They are so worth it though. I received them as a gift when I got my current NA job and I don't wear anything else now. After you break them in they are wonderful. But, when I first started the program I bought some all white New Balances from Academy that worked fine for clinical, and I've heard good things about Nursemates as well. I do know some people who were reprimanded for having colored shoe laces or other colors that were noticeable in first semester so make sure they are solid black or white with minimal coloring. You can look up the nursing handbook on the nursing page of OSU-OKC's website and it specifically tells you the dress code.

If you all have not gotten your stethoscope yet. Medisave.com is have a deal for the breast cancer stethoscope for $65.69. Deal of the Week I got my stethoscope from there. It was $40 cheaper than the local shops.
