Hello,
I have a meeting with a parent regarding her daughter being treated for her peanut allergy through oral immunotherapy. Apparently the amount of peanut she's being exposed to is going to be increased.
From the research I have done I see that this type of therapy isn't FDA approved...yet.
Can anyone shed some light on caring for a child in a school undergoing this treatment? Will this flare up her asthma? Is every stomach ache going to be a call to mom?
My Epi pen has the cap off already:) I should just keep it on my desk, right:)
Thanks.

I had 1 student go thru this, he would eat X amount of peanut M&m's every evening with dinner. I never had any issues with him at school during the day. Mom would send an email every so often to let me know they were increasing the amount. I did have Benadryl and an Epipen for him at school. Sorry not much advice.

No personal experience here but another nurse in my district had a student who did it. No issues ever at school and the student can apparently eat a handful of peanuts now!
Wow, thanks guys.

I have a young student going through this right now. No issues at school. Good information to know. But, not a huge concern for school. (at least with my kiddo)

I just became allergic to peanuts/tree nuts this past fall - rash only. I tempt the gods randomly to see if it was a fluke, but no. I have a new sympathy for these kids, not to mention I miss peanuts.

Wonder why they don't do these challenges over vacation/during the summer?
I don't know if I would be ok with it....Most of the kids I know who have had a pb challenge did so at the MD and were monitored over a period of hours afterward.
