Opinions spouted on religion and politics at nurses station

Nurses General Nursing

Updated:   Published

At report time, one of our per diem nurses once again launched into an opinionated little speech about a certain religious group. It's really ackward when people do this, and offensive. I don't like to make a scene, but if you have an issue with a religious group, a politician, a nationality, I don't want to hear it. Thank you.

I think we are working in some really bad times......people have changed, I never talked that way to an older nurse when I was their age and I have never worked with anyone who was so liberal and radical in this profession either.

Not everyone has changed, not all younger nurses are like what you described, and to lump them all in a group like that is age discrimination in and of itself.

What tattoos, living with a boyfriend, Media, etc has to do with ANYTHING, I'm not sure.

People who discuss their liking for Media at work are probably not the most professional or mature, and from my point of view have less than stellar characters. In all my years in healthcare, I've never heard a conversation about Media at work. Also, from my point of view, Media is degrading to women and men and I don't want to hear about it at work.:nono:

True... but I think she might have gotten that from the MySpace... not sure though. Why anyone would want to spout that kind information out there either way, is beyond me.

Exactly. She didn't say she was talking about it at work or how she knows this. I agree it shouldn't be something that should be discussed at work. But tattoos, living with her boyfriend ...... who cares? And what does that have to do with anything?

...and some wonder why we have a problem w/our professional image.

I think Media is wrong, wrong, wrong. But I have heard nurses talk about it at the nurses station. Where they keep their movies hidden. Where they put their sex toys. How often their husbands cruise the net looking at Media. One nurse brought her vibrator to work and put in one of the batteries belonging to one of our tele units in the vibrator and showed it off. She also tells these disgusting stories. Not around me anymore of course because I am a "prude". ;)

I'd much rather talk about politics and/or religion.

I am in TX.

I am sick to my eyeballs of nurses praising George Bush and praising the Lord at the nurses' station, and to the patients.

My former UM is a super GWB fan. However, her superior moral attitude did not stop her from bringing her member-shaped lipstick that she bought at a sex-toy party into work and showing everybody.

In short, the hypocrisy of Republican party, ala Foley and Craig

I don't think having a member-shaped lipstick is immoral or hypocritical.

It is just icky . .. ;)

Well, she is immoral and hippocritical. She demonstrates this in numerous ways- none of which have anything to do with her choice in cosmetics- the lipstick was just the icing on the cake-but I digress.

Obviously I don't know the woman so I can't say.

I was merely, as a Republican, responding to the comment "hypocritical" related to having a member-shaped lipstick. That in and of itself doesn't, to me, scream hypocrisy.

As to the immoral comment - I'll admit to reading that into comments so sorry about that.

Here is the comment that got under my skin . . and it does say "Republican" and "hypocrisy"and was in response to this:

Sorry about your brain . . . :icon_hug:

I didn't think anyone was fighting . . .
