I'm in Med-surg 2 right now... semester ends the beginning of December. I just registered to take OB/Peds next semester for the 1st half of the semester and Psych the second half of the semesters. We have "mini-mesters" for these two courses, 8 weeks each. Not sure how others have it. Since I'm taking OB/Peds first, I was wondering what your experience was with this if you've already taken it or are currently taking this course. I'm really excited about it!!! It will be something different, and the care plans aren't the same and are less work. Please tell me your thoughts :) Thanks!

The OB/Maternal Health rotation was an easy 'A' grade for me. Much of the information you'll be learning is specialized and specific.
I struggled somewhat with the peds rotation because it seemed like a mini Med/surg for infants and children. There was so much general information to learn in a 6 week period. In addition, I have difficulty relating to children, so my personal views on kids probably colored my reactions to this class. I ended up earning a 'B' grade for this course.

OB/peds were intense in my program. OB is all new info. The previous poster is right about peds--it's a mini med/surge for kids. Lots of childhood diseases, burns, drowning, etc. It's doable, but it took a lot more studying on my end. Good luck. It has been my favorite part of nursing so far.

This is how my school does it. 8 weeks each of OB and psych. I'm doing that next semester. I'm not looking forward to OB....I know I'm going to hate it and it'll be the worst 8 weeks of my life, lol. But it's a stepping stone and it has to be done. Anyway....good luck!

Peds was one of the hardest classes at my school and we lost the most people from that class. Don't really have an opinion of OB because today was my first day but I have heard it's nothing like Pedi.

I hated OB... hated the lectures, hated the clinicals. No surprise that I got a 76 on our one and only OB test. But peds was actually kind of interesting, with all the developmental stages. Unfortunately our clinical rotation was at a nursing home for kids with severe autism, MR, and other developmental delays, so there was no way to apply what we were learning in class to our clinicals, since our patients were nowhere near normal for their ages...
As for psych... let's just say I was hugely relieved to dive into cardiac when that was over with... lectures finally made sense again!

I actually like OB now, but my teacher kills it for me. She is an awful instructor and even worse at clinicals. Its a shame when you actually like one of the areas you are doing for once only to have it ruined by a bad instructor. We also have a full semester of it so I envy you guys with the OB/psych rotations over 8 weeks

I'm in a BSN program and am taking OB and Psych right now. We take them simultaneously for a total of 16 weeks, so it's a LONG semester. I really like my maternity lecture and clinical....my teachers are great and I've seen a lot at the hospital. It is a lot of work and seems crammed for 16 weeks, I can't imagine how you can learn it in 8 weeks!!

I disliked OB... and loved peds and neonatal.
Best of all for us: No care plans!

OB was a bit boring for me. Peds was better. I got A's in both classes but I prefer Peds.

I hated OB. It was boring and nasty. There is nothing romantic about watching someone have a baby.

OB and guys don't mix very well. If you're a guy, good luck to you and tough it out. When I mean tough it out .. I mean be ready to sit there and do nothing after you're done taking care of your baby(ies) for the day. L&D days were my saving grace from absolute boredom. The content is what you would expect, though I did find it relevant and useful.
If you're a girl. Have fun?
Peds is cool, though kids I were assigned usually weren't as sick as you would imagine by reading the charts. That was a pretty easy clinical in that regard.
