Nurses and professors, tell me your experiences with nursing students. Include your general impression of them.
Hi there, student nurse here! Do you mind if I ask your opinion on what we can do to rectify this issue? In regards to the issue of new grads hopping onto the job market in hordes, do you believe that nursing schools need to be more selective?
Yes, and the low quality nursing schools should be shut down.
As I stated in another post, the only students I can't stand are the know-it-alls because they're terrifying and difficult to teach because they already have a better practice than you, a seasoned nurse, and don't ask before doing things that could kill someone.
Otherwise I love having students and it's usually a great time! I've only ever had a couple bad eggs myself, but have see it numerous times (and, of course, there seems to be at least one of them in each class haha). It's fun to teach and sometimes learn along with the students and keeps me on my toes!
xo
It's not so much the students as it is the program they are coming from. It is much more pleasant to deal with students that have an engaged CI that is actually on the floor with them instead of the CI that does a dump and run and just expects the nurses to take over their students education for them.
My opinion on students no matter the school depends entirely on the individual. Some students are able to overcome a mediocre to lousy program and excel. On the other hand some students from a reputable to excellent program can suck bad.
First, can I say, I hate the stupid, sarcastic smiley face. Please stop using it. We all know what it means.
I personally dislike being a nursing student. I always feel like I'm in the way and I can't do anything usually without an instructor present. It's frustrating.
I recently obtained a job in a hospital as a patient care tech. They all know I'm a nursing student and I know my role do it's much easier. The nurses show me stuff and it's so laid back and I get to do tons of stuff.
It honestly doesn't bother me if I have to go into a what is called on here as a code brown. It's happens, you clean it up, and move on.
Last night I worked and had a great time. I got to do my first bladder scan. Tomorrow, I will go to clinical as a nursing student and will feel completely out of place. I'm just glad I only have 2 clinical days left.

I'm aware that people know what it means. I don't take them for idiots, hun
Thank you for sharing your experience!
I didn't enjoy being a nursing student, but loved working with them the few times I did so. I connected more so with those who were not as sure of themselves versus the more confident ones, but had a positive experience with all of them. I never actually dealt with students who were know-it-alls, just some stronger ones with plans for the day that were impressive and more than I would have expected from them.
