Is it possible that autism and vaccines are linked?
I am always shocked at the claim that vaccinations can be linked with autism...primarily because of the sheer number of children that have received the vaccinations....and the age that they receive them and when the condition seems to manifest itself...it seems to be a "stretch" as far as a claim.
It wasn't that long ago, when autism was actually found to be a completely separate illness...it was originally thought to be a combination of mental retardation and schizophrenia.

Autism is NOT an illness. It is a developmental disorder. I can't imagine why the idea that vaccinations may be linked to autism should shock you. I can understand disagreeing with the possibility, but given that the first signs of this disorder so often appear at around the same time as children are vaccinated, what, exactly, is there to be shocked about by the notion that some people wonder if there may be a connection?

Yeah, it sounds kinda abstract to me too. Kinda like millions of people eat tons of hot dogs and have microwaves in their houses, yet only a relative few get cancer. A lot claim that aluminum in the vaccines do it. I use aluminum-based deodorant every day, and eat foods wrapped in foil. Mercury-based vaccines, however, I can believe. Remember the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland? Hatters went mad from the mercury used to cure felt.
However, one thing that a nursing instructor threw at me is that we used to give one vaccine at a time, monitor, and wait before the next one. Nowadays, we give them as many as possible. That's food for thought.
Is he autistic PeachPie? Then he cannot help it and there is really nothing that can be done about it.I hope to god that if you ever get some kind of brain injury or cognitive impairment that causes you to act that way that you are surrounded by people who are a bit more tolerant than you seem to be.
I hope to God that when you ever say anything that no one will jump the gun about what you might have meant and read more carefully. Sheesh........

I think some underestimate vaccinations. I stopped breathing as an infant the evening I had my first shots. I spent three weeks on a ventilator in NICU.
Did the vaccinations cause it? I don't know. I do know that I'm glad they never let me have any again. Only now that I'm about to enter nursing school, am I having all the childhood shots.

Vaccinations are not without risks...none of them are. The risk factor may only be 1%, but unfortunately, there are some infants, like yourself, that end up being that 1%.
Some infants die just from being put under anesthesia, but the surgeries, when necessary, go on and there isn't a huge movement to never put babies under anesthesia when neccessary.
I have to disagree that autism is a developmental disorder...there is substantial debate of whether it's an illness or a developmental disorder, primarily because we don't know what causes it.
Another example is Down's Syndrome...which isn't really a syndrome anymore, because the term syndrome is used to determine a set of conditions for which there is no known cause, and we have known what causes Down's Syndrome for quite some time, but the name has "stuck".

I would 100% agree with your instructor on that argument. That is where the true experience of nursing comes in. It would be interesting to see when they made the switch to combination vaccines and when autism started to appear.
My son was sick once and they wanted to update him on his shots during a sick visit, and I wouldn't allow it...I don't care what the research says, I don't think it's healthy. I don't even allow them to give my dog a shot when he's sick, so I certainly won't do it for my children.
I feel the same way about aspartame...if aspartame caused cancer, then diabetics, which consume more aspartame than the average individual, you would see a pronounced spike in cancer rates, and there hasn't been a shred of evidence to support that.....
....I say as I drink my Diet Coke :)

A debate by who? Clearly, your opinion of ''substantial'' differs from mine, because I've only heard a few people refer to autism as an illness during the past decade. It is very well established as a developmental disorder, which is why federally mandated and funded services fall under the Developmental Disabilities Act.
Sorry, but I've never heard a definition of syndrome that includes the criteria there is no known cause for the constellation of symptoms. AIDS is a syndrome, as are fetal alcohol syndrome, toxic shock syndrome and numerous other conditions for which etiology is well established. Where are you getting your information?

I do not think it is quite that simple.
Yeah Hopefull, it would be great to see when autism rates started to spike, as well as when other changes were made. The hard thing is that autism has been long classified as other things, like mental retardation and schizophrenia. It's hard to look back and make logical correlations with such skewed data. I hope that they start taking careful stastistics of things like this.

AIDS was named before they found the actual virus that caused it, like Down's Syndrome, the name stuck.
Same thing with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Here is your source...and it's in the second paragraph..
