Ontario Second-Entry Nursing (2017)

Published

Hey everyone :)

So fall just flew in so I thought what a great time it would be to start my nursing applications lol. It is very early, but I enjoy having this on my mind. I am in my final year at University and am hoping to be a nursing student come next September. I wanted to make a space where we could come together with a common goal: getting accepted. The schools I plan to apply are:

Trent, Toronto, Humber, Western and Queens

Possibly considering RPN programs as well.

Hi there!

Do you know how many people got accepted to the program? Humber is my first choice and I have a 3.5 gpa so I really worried!

Hi!

I'm applying to second entry nursing and I'm pretty nervous. I did my bachelor's in Biochemistry at Waterloo which wasn't easy and my average is pretty low: ~77 % overall and for the last ten courses which I believe is a 3.3 on the GPA scale.

I'm applying to Trent, McMaster, Queen's, Toronto, York and maybe Humber. I have lots of extra-curricular activities and volunteering so I'm hoping that will help.

Hi nnn9,

do you know if you can go a Masters for Nurse Practitioner with a degree from Humber? I had read that Humber is a BN and some NP programs require a BSc.

What if you graduated already and took an extra semester of non-degree courses? Would that help towards U of T and York's application? I hold a BSc from U of T. Does anybody have experience with that?

Hey triNurse2017 , I have an average in my last 10 courses of 82%, and I'm worried about not getting accepted to Toronto and York... I feel like you will need a higher GPA for those two, because I had a 79% last year and did not get in.

Good to know Mr.Dee!

What sort of extra-curriculars and research experience do you have?

I have heard that research in particular will help with UofT. Also, isn't CASPer new this year for York? that might give you a boost if you are looking to get into York still.

Unfortunately, I did not have research positions, but I did hold volunteer positions at Sunnybrook and Mount Sinai Hospital. I also was a video director with the Biology Student's Association at the University of Toronto. Other than that, I held jobs during school.

The CASPer does seem like it could make or break an application for sure, since York says: The CASPer score will be weighted one third to the applicant's academic record (GPA) two thirds in the admissions assessment process. That's a pretty big deal. I heard there are medical ethics books with scenarios that can be reviewed to help one be better prepared though. I'm going to go to the local bookstore to find some, as well as look online. You should probably do that too.

I was going to do the same thing, I contacted Uoft and York at the end of the summer just before my graduation from UofT in November and they told me they would only accept courses taken as part of my degree, so I had to cancel my graduation in order for them to accept the extra courses I completed.

What? They told me something different. They said non-degree courses count. I emailed both of those places this year.

Also it doesn't look like my other comment to you, triNurse2017 got posted... so to reiterate, I volunteered at Sunnybrook and Mount Sinai, as well as held the position of video director at my University's Biology Student's association. Other than that, I just worked.

The CASPer test does seem like it can make or break an application though, since their website does place significant weight on it.

I guess it just depends who you talked to. I just checked my email and this was UofTs exact response about the same question.

"GPA calculation is based on the final year of the degree, not courses after degree completion. CR/NCR will not be considered for prerequisite requirements and GPA calculation."

Mr.Dee, that's weird. I can see both comments. Anyways, from what I know I think its good you have those volunteer experiences. And good luck with your applications!

And thank you for the information! I will look into that for CASPer :)

Has anyone here taken the Casper test before? The admissions person said that it's something we don't study for but it counts for so much of the application. I looked at the practice questions on the website and it described scenarios in real life/interviews rather than in the hospital. For example, what are your strengths? Etc. Maybe the test for medical students is more focused on medical ethics. Anybody have any experience/tips?

Also, I'm planning to apply to Trent and some Toronto schools but am hesitating on Toronto because I've heard renting there is insanely expensive. Anybody know cheaper universities/cities with lower costs of living in the province? Thanks!
