Ontario Second-Entry Nursing (2017)

World Canada CA Programs

Hey everyone :)

So fall just flew in so I thought what a great time it would be to start my nursing applications lol. It is very early, but I enjoy having this on my mind. I am in my final year at University and am hoping to be a nursing student come next September. I wanted to make a space where we could come together with a common goal: getting accepted. The schools I plan to apply are:

Trent, Toronto, Humber, Western and Queens

Possibly considering RPN programs as well.

@gec123 what is your gpa? I am anxiously waiting on a response from Humber too!

For anyone applying to Nippising for the SPP, I emailed admissions in regards to the delayed CASPer results, and they informed me that they not have received anyone's results as of yet, but they will be sending out interview invitations shortly. (The interviews will take place between April 10-14th.)

For anyone applying to Nippising for the SPP...

Awesome, thanks a lot for sharing this info with us! I took a different route and emailed CASPer directly instead, haha. :p I believe interview invitations will be sent out until the end of March. I'm so anxious, I'm checking the Web Advisor several times a day...

I called Nipissing directly and they informed me the same thing about the casper results! But I was wondering why they shortened the interview period from 2 weeks to just 4 days?! Was anybody else wondering about this? Do you think they received fewer applications or have fewer spots this year?

Hopefully they have fewer applications and therefore more spots!

Hi Everyone!

I've been coming back to this forum quite a bit and figured I should introduce myself as well :)

I finished my undergrad degree in 2016 (university of guelph's engineering program with coop and a minor in business) however my first passion was always health care, and after trying to figure out what direction I wanted my career to go in, I decided on nursing! I've applied to the University of Toronto, Western, and Trent for their 2 year compressed programs, and I'm anxiously waiting to hear back from them. My cumulative average for all 5 years of school is around a 73% and my last year of study is somewhere around an 81-82%, but I'm hoping to boost that a little bit more because I'm still in the process of finishing the physiology pre-requisite. On that note, is anyone still taking BIOL 235 through Athabasca? I'm struggling with the material for the second midterm and still trying to figure out a good study schedule, so any advice would be great!

Good luck with admissions everyone! :)

Hi @tesla20 :) I'm also taking Biology 235 through Athabasca. I'm scheduled to write the second midterm on March 28th and I'm super nervous about it! Are you currently working and/or taking other classes? What's your current study schedule like?

Hi @future.RN.! :) I'm scheduled to write it on March 23rd so I can let you know how it goes! I'm currently working full-time so evenings and weekends are usually the only time I can dedicate to studying for the course. Right now my schedule is trying to study a chapter a day (currently on Chapter 16), I have notes already written out for each chapter so now I'm going through and highlighting/making notes on top of my old notes, and then trying the wileyplus questions. If I can get 20-30 questions correct in a section, I'll move onto the next section; however if I'm struggling, I'll go back and review that section again. I also found a youtube channel called "crash course" which has great 10 minute videos summarizing different anatomy concepts. It's great to watch to get a visual representation of the chapter, as I found that sometimes my mind would start to wander when trying to read the online textbook. I think the biggest challenge for me is adapting to this learning style, as it is very heavy on memorization where the majority of my undergrad was problem solving. What's your schedule like?

@tesla20 sent you a PM :)

Hey @future.RN.! I got your message but it seems that I can't message back, I got an error saying I have to be a part of 15 discussions or something. Maybe it's because I've recently signed up to be a member. I'll see if I can get around it

Hi I'm a little confused!

Do most accelerated nursing programs only look at your final 2 years gpa? If so, which ones? Im thinking of applying after my 4-year undergrad. I have about 3.3 in my first two years but hoping to have a 3.9-4.0 in my final 2 years. I have a bunch of EC's, research and looking to have a published research article by the end of my 4th year. What do you think my chances are?

I think they look at both cGPA and GPA from your last 2 years worth of credits - it's probably different from school to school. Like I applied to York - they want you to have a B cGPA but a B+ in last 2 years. And you have to remember, GPA isn't everything anymore with nursing programs. Many of the schools have adopted CASPer and supplementary applications that can have a significant weighting on your application. I know people who had fairly average GPAs and still got in. But I would say you are probably good, especially if you have a strong CASPer/supplementary :)
