Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2020

Updated:   Published

Hey, I used to creep these forums for the past few years and they helped affirm my decision to apply to nursing school for Fall 2020. I didn't see one started for next year so I thought, why not start one?

I graduated a while back so I'm a bit older, but my top three choices are:

1. Queen's

2. McMaster

3. York

4. Humber-UNB

Do they normally send out rejections at the end for UofT?

I was also wondering when rejections are sent out. I’m guessing July ? I just want to know the verdict already LOL

Does anyone know about how many people UofT accepts each year? I’m curious about how big the class is and I can’t seem to find that information anywhere!

@hopefulnurse6 @rachO To my knowledge, rejections are sent out at the end of June. If you are offered to be put on the waitlist and confirm your interest, you have a chance to get off until the first day of classes.

They accept around 170 people per year, although I'm sure it varies each year. I'm just wondering if they will be adjusting numbers this year due to COVID and the shortage of nurses though.

York won’t be online labs I was told.

CONGRATS on the Western acceptance it’s a stunning school and their nursing building is top notch.

how do you know york won't have online labs?

Hey guys I got my offer at Western today so I'm no longer on the waitlist! I'm confused between choosing between this and York as I think York will be completely online while at Western labs will still resume. IDK if its worth going. Either way, a spot will open up at one of these for those on waitlist!

CONGRATS! Western is a good university.

For me personally, I ll go to whichever close to home. I hate to spend extra dime for housing and all. As OSAP probably will give us less due to Covid19, as of now, Ontario is in $$$ deficit. At the end we are all gonna be a nurse. We learn to be better nurse everyday anyway even after we graduated. I was at both end of the table at some point in my life, I remembered I hired a candidate who came from “lesser university descent with decent GPA” than the rest of candidate because she had a good work ethics with a clear mission and vision and her resume showed me that she was a good team player. That’s all I needed for that specific role.
With this being said, my personal opinion, it doesn’t matter where you graduated. What mater is what you have learnt, adapt, and utilize during and after your study.

As for online, it’s temporary, you should weight in overall total cost and benefit.

heck.. sometime after all that pros and cons I make and I still dont know where to go I just follow my gut. LOL

Good luck... !

CONGRATS!! I am the same as you, and I decided to pick York for reasons already mentioned in this thread. First financial, No point paying for rent in London when a couple drives to GTA- York for lab will save a lot of $$ instead. I don't mind 100% online tbh, most of your learning is on the job anyways. Since it's close to toronto, your placements will be better relatively. Making connections and getting your foot in the door at your placements is so important when it comes to getting your first job post-grad. Toronto is also a cool city. My sister and my close friends have had great experiences at York.

Has anyone that has accepted Humber began anything to do with placement requirements (such as vaccinations, courses, police check)? Or emailed regarding such as we haven’t had any recent updates.

Since Humber's nursing program technically starts in January 2021 I don't think we have to do anything just yet! Also probably why they haven't sent out an email outlining the requirements ?

Someone told me the got an email response and had that question. Apparently the ministry is going to be facilitating PPE donations to schools with important first responder programs and they mentioned nursing directly. The PPE donations to ensure that students are safe in the labs. Because nursing is really really important to have first hand experience they will be facilitating this. A friend of mine in med school told me the same thing.

I see many classes online Forsure but technical hands on work should continue as the ministry of education mentioned they will be facilitating.

Regardless I would say chose the one you’re most comfortable with. York is a decent school. Little bit outdated especially the nursing department in comparison to western which has a beautiful campus and a lot of nature and a new building. My cousin who went there told me he loved the atmosphere there more than York. On the downside London is a sketchy place. Not everyone will like it. Campus life is nice but outside is just meh. Some people also appreciate the Western name more than York.

whatever you end up deciding, congratulations both are wonderful !
