Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2019

World Canada CA Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone,

I am currently a third year York University student hoping to apply for second entry nursing at York

only next year (yes I am going through the strike).

Since applications open in November, I thought it would be best to get this forum started. I am hoping to get more insight into the program and I hope current and past nursing students would share their views on the program and how job searching went. Also, what nursing specialties do most York nursing graduates enter as I am hoping to get into public health. Furthermore, share your insights on Humber, McMaster, U of T, Trent, Queens, Western, Ottawa and Nippissing. (I think that is all) and don't forget to include your acceptance GPAs.

Hey everyone! I'm currently a second-entry student at Humber! If anyone has any questions, let me know!

When did you find out you'd been accepted/ did you hear of anyone who got in off the waitlist?

for those who just got accepted into western, what was your average if you don't mind sharing ?

I got in with an 88-89% average which I think is well above what they are looking for. If you're in the 80-84% range, don't lose hope! I know someone who got off waitlist with an 80% average last year. That being said, spots open because of people declining offers. I will personally be declining my offer today because I got into the masters program of my choice also at western! Today is also the deadline to accept for the people who were admitted May 31st, so if you didn't hear back, you should be hearing back soon. Best of luck everyone!

Hey ! If anyone can just clarify uoft admission requirements: you need to have taken at least 10 full course equivalents

AND have at least a mid B IN the final year or last five full course equivalents.

So they're not looking at your gpa in the last 10 full course equivalents but the last 5 full course in your final year ?

Thanks!

I believe if you took more than five courses in your final year they are going to calculate the GPA for all of them. This seems like it only applies to the final year of a program and not to additional courses taken after completing a degree (additional nursing preqrequisites, for example).

Hello there! I'll be starting at Humber-UNB for the Second Entry Prep semester and I'll be taking Microbiology, Anatomy, and Pathophysiology. Did you happen to take any of these courses for your preparation? If so, how were they in terms of workload/relative difficulty/support from professors?

Furthermore, do you have any advice for anyone about to embark on this program? ?

Thank you so much for all of your help in advance!

Hi! Congratulations!!

Those were the only 3 courses that I took in the prep semester. When I was going into the program I took the (then program coordinators) advice and started studying the first week of classes and basically did not stop for the rest of the semester! It’s definitely a lot of work... I studied many, many hours per week but I ended up doing really well. I think I had a 91 average! What helped is that the professors were the best I’ve ever experienced! They care so much and are so knowledgeable!

My best advice for the prep semester would be to keep up with the work the best you can (it’s sometimes impossible to do so) and never miss class! I personally found it helpful to review all my notes immediately after class, because once you start studying for the midterms (2 for each class + a final) it ends up being a lot of info!

I would also advise taking time this summer to relax! As much as I love the program, it’s a lot of work and the actual nursing courses/clinical require even more time, work and dedication than the prep semester (if you can even imagine).

But I love it and I’m sure you will too! If you love it then it makes all the hard work worth it ? But sleep and relax as much as you can now hahaha

Thank you so much for all of this information! The program sure sounds like it'll get busy but I'll definitely make the most of my summer in that case! I also wanted to ask how paper/essay intensive the prep semester was and how the lab/practical portions for some of the courses were (in your experience).

Apologies for all of the questions. You've been a great help! Thanks a billion again! ?

Hi guys, so I jut got accepted to Trents Compressed nursing program yesterday morning and I was wondering if anyone had any input about Trent's program. It was my second last choice so I'm not sure if I should wait to hear back from UofT's nursing program or if I should give it a chance. Also I'm a third year student taking summer school right now so I'm not sure if I should just finish my current undergrad at UofT or switch into a compressed program now. Nursing is my goal but I've come so far in my undergrad that I dont know whether it's better to finish it off. Any suggestions would be great! Thankkss!! :)

hey! from what i know uoft mostly accepts students who are either finished their undergrad or in 4th year, so if your goal is uoft then might as well just finish your undergrad and then go for uoft next year!

No problem at all!

For our prep semester we didn’t have any papers in the three science courses. It was only labs for anatomy and 2 midterms + a final for each! I believe that the stats course and the psych course had weekly or biweekly tests and labs so that was a lot for them! I didn’t take those two courses though.

The midterms are fairly difficult, you definitely need to know the material very well! They are multiple choice but they are what they call “multiple-multiple” questions where there are a set of answers and you have to pick out all of the correct answers, so knowing things well is an absolute must.

The anatomy lab was the best experience! The lab instructors are awesome! You do have to complete a lab before going each week, but if you pay attention in class you can do it no problem (with some research possibly). The instructors are there to help you with any questions but you have to prepare before hand because you have to go to the lab and work through the stations on your own!

Other than that the anatomy class has 3 bell-ringer exams as well, which I was superrrr nervous for but they are fine as long as you study! You definitely can’t get by the semester with studying last minute or not in depth.

Hope this helps!

Hi guys,

Has anyone received their final offers from Queens and anymore information as to what is required for entry into the program? I accepted my conditional offer but haven't heard anything since. Thanks!

Thank you for all of this once again, you're extremely informative and definitely easing some of the anxiety I'm feeling jumping into this prep semester! Are the labs for Anatomy online or in person? And do we do them by ourselves or in groups?

I hope you're enjoying the actual nursing program and wishing you all the best! ?
