Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2019

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone,

I am currently a third year York University student hoping to apply for second entry nursing at York

only next year (yes I am going through the strike).

Since applications open in November, I thought it would be best to get this forum started. I am hoping to get more insight into the program and I hope current and past nursing students would share their views on the program and how job searching went. Also, what nursing specialties do most York nursing graduates enter as I am hoping to get into public health. Furthermore, share your insights on Humber, McMaster, U of T, Trent, Queens, Western, Ottawa and Nippissing. (I think that is all) and don't forget to include your acceptance GPAs.

hi all, when can we expect to hear back from Western? its the only school I've applied to in nursing-I have applied to other programs as well. I have Bach of science from 2015

Based on what I've read it seems like they send out their decisions closer to the end of March/early April?

Welcome! Have you taken the CASPER test yet? If so, how did you find it? I take mine on the 12th!

I have not! It’s scheduled for the 24th now. I was going to take it on the 12th but I’ll be working at that time. I’m pretty anxious about it!

Hey guys,

I'm also taking my casper test o the 12th. Hopefully all goes well!

Would anyone have any insight as to how the programs for Queens/Western/Toronto are? I haven't really been able to find any insider views on the grading schemes/clinical placements and overall experience with the accelerated programs.

Hello!

I've applied to Queens, Toronto and Western for their accelerated programs. I received my acceptance to Queens today and the last day to accept their offer is May 1st. I have about a 3.8 in my last year, and I'm currently completing my third year at Western in a BSc. in Biology. I'm going to wait and see whether I get offers from other universities before making any decisions. It's good to meet all of you!

Hey! Just wondering if on Solus (for Queens) do you have university transcript still in your "to do" box? I'm wondering if there is an issue with ouac sending mine or if they just don't update that box when they're reviewing for acceptances. Congrats on Queens though :)

I have a conditional offer stating that I get a minimum 2.7 GPA average for this year, so it still has a request for a transcript for my second semester grades. This is on my SOLUS:

Ah okay! It still says initiated for my first semester grades so I guess maybe my transcript hasn't been processed yet! I'm really hoping to get into Queens so hopefully they process it soon! Thanks for sending this and again congrats ?

Hey everyone!

I'm currently completing my last year at UofT and I'll be graduating with a bachelor of science! My top choice is UofT. My final year (last 5.0 credits) gpa is around a 3.79 on the OMSAS scale. It's slightly higher with the UofT scale (3.85). CGPA is 3.63 I completed a co-op placement at credit valley hospital in 2015 and currently returned to volunteer there as a hospital elder life program volunteer. I've been doing that for the past 7 months. I also have 3 years of experience in tutoring, and in my third year (this year) I got promoted. I was also vice president for one club at school. I'm currently doing research with one of my profs (who was my reference) so I have some experience in that. I also have work experience in the customer service industry so I'm hoping that's enough. Honestly I'm kind of worried because everyone gets into uoft with 3.9s and above so here's hoping. Good luck to all you guys and hope we all get in!

You're all amazing!!!! Thank you!!! Hope we all get into our first choices ?

I see from their FAQs that UofT calculates Final Year average as follows:

"Completed courses of your most recent year of studies (usually Fall term courses of year 4, Summer courses – if any, and Winter courses for year 3) will be considered for grade average calculation at the time of our admissions review. The Admissions Office will recalculate your final year average when you submit final transcripts with all completed grades."

But lets say a person did 5 courses in their fourth year first semester and 3 in summer. For the additional 2 courses to make up the 10 will the admissions committee take the average of just the winter semester of the person's third year, or will they take the average of the entire third year and apply it to the calculation?

Hmmm...... maybe you should contact the admissions office, but I think it would make sense that they take the winter term average only (I think). Also on UofT Admission requirements for Nursing. it states:

To be eligible to enter the BScN program, applicants must have completed at least ten (10) university full-course equivalents prior to admission, with at least a mid-B (approximately 75% or 3.0 GPA) average in the final year of study, or the last five (5) full-course equivalents of their university education. Of the ten (10) courses, a maximum of six (6) courses can be at the 100-level.

To clarify is 10 university full course equivalents is based on your last 60 credits (York University)? I'm a bit confused!
