Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2019

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone,

I am currently a third year York University student hoping to apply for second entry nursing at York

only next year (yes I am going through the strike).

Since applications open in November, I thought it would be best to get this forum started. I am hoping to get more insight into the program and I hope current and past nursing students would share their views on the program and how job searching went. Also, what nursing specialties do most York nursing graduates enter as I am hoping to get into public health. Furthermore, share your insights on Humber, McMaster, U of T, Trent, Queens, Western, Ottawa and Nippissing. (I think that is all) and don't forget to include your acceptance GPAs.

thanks @hikimchi !

Congrats!!! That's amazing, I'm so happy for you!!! ?

If you don't mind sharing, what's your GPA in your last year, and any EC's?

my last 2 year gpa is about a 3.7 or 3.8 on the Ryerson scale (I think that's like an A- or B+ not sure), and ECs are totally random lol:

- food bank volunteer

- student mentor

- Ashoka changemaker science representative

- SickKids volunteer

- medical assistant

- science rendez-vous (I helped at the booths)

- dodgeball intramural

those are the ones I can remember off my head though.. I really just did ECs that I really care about. Plus I only took 4 courses instead of 5 during my last year, I retook anatomy too lol. So I'm honsestly so humbled to be a part of an amazing group! ?

but honestly I hesitate to put this up bc I don't want anyone to use this for comparison, only to gain perspective on the diversity of people in nursing. I truly believe that we all have unique and extraordinary life experiences that brought us to where we are now, that will make us fantastic, caring and amazing nurses/health professionals wherever we end up! ?

I just found this forum today - I also got an acceptance to U of T last week. I’ve been out of school for 10 years working (degree in engineering) and due to some personal reasons, decided to make a career change. My GPA was about a 3.9 on a 4.3 or an A-. I did lots of extracurriculars when I was in school (mainly surrounding the engineering society) but any volunteering I’ve done since has been related to my kid’s daycare or United Way with work. I’m also not trying to brag or make comparisons - I also want to point out that I think they want people with diverse backgrounds and I put most my my effort into my personal statements, explaining why I felt like I was a good candidate. I’m honestly intimidated now reading all the extracurriculars everyone else has been doing! But also very excited to join a class and profession of passionate, involved, and compassionate individuals ? good luck to everyone and I’ll be the old one in class in September ?

Congrats!!!! No need to feel intimidated, i think we’re all in the same boat. We’ve all got some type of knowledge and experience we bring to the table and there is no one perfect candidate. I honestly was not expecting an acceptance either because i was never really involved at school (i literally put down every little thing i could think of to fill the void haha) but clearly they see something in us!

And for anyone waiting, it’s still very early on in the game! Keep your heads up high ?

CONGRATS!!!!

Hey everyone!
I've also been following this thread for a while but never commented because I was really feeling like I wasn't going to get into anything...but to my surprise today I checked the York status on My file page and it had changed from under review to admitted! I also applied to UofT (just in case) and to Nippising which I already received a rejection from. I don't even know how to calculate my GPA because I have a Psych degree from York (which my GPA was about a B) and then I got a Human Resources Management certificate from Ryerson and my gpa there was an A...and I just took 4 classes at York to make up the prerequisites I was missing and got As in all of them so far, so I really don't know what to include in the GPA calculation...I don't know if my Ryerson grades count or not. I also did an exchange abroad in Australia for a semester during my undergrad and had the transcript send to the unis I applied to, so I also don't know if they included those grades in the calculation of my GPA. Either way, I am super thrilled! I just had my last exam today for Anatomy and Physiology II and think I went well. I haven't received a letter or email from York yet. Good luck to everyone still waiting. Just wanted to share this since I don't think my GPA was as high as most others who posted on here so hopefully this gives you guys some hope!

Interesting career change! My other alternative instead of nursing was doing accelerated Computer Science at UBC but I decided I don't want to sit all day and think that I would be happier in healthcare.

hi! it took a couple of days for mine to show up after I got the email. Then it switched to "accepted" and took another few days until I could see the official letter. ?

Haha. Yeah comp sci would have been a lot of sitting! And I agree, an accelerated degree would have been intense.
