Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2019

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone,

I am currently a third year York University student hoping to apply for second entry nursing at York

only next year (yes I am going through the strike).

Since applications open in November, I thought it would be best to get this forum started. I am hoping to get more insight into the program and I hope current and past nursing students would share their views on the program and how job searching went. Also, what nursing specialties do most York nursing graduates enter as I am hoping to get into public health. Furthermore, share your insights on Humber, McMaster, U of T, Trent, Queens, Western, Ottawa and Nippissing. (I think that is all) and don't forget to include your acceptance GPAs.

Hey guys, I have also been following this thread for a while just waiting for acceptances to arrive. I have now been accepted to Trent, Nipissing, Humber, Mac and U of T. I think my top three are Humber, Mac and U of T, but I am having a really hard time choosing. Any advice about the programs? I know U of T accepts around 175 students which is much more than the other programs, would this be a disadvantage?

Also for U of T, I received an email of acceptance, but it has not shown up on OUAC yet, is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

It depends when you were accepted to U of T. My acceptance didn't show up on OUAC for about 2 days, so if you got accepted Thurs/Friday it'll probably be a few business days!

Can anyone give insight on the UNB-Humber Second Entry Nursing Program? I'd appreciate any feedback ?

Hey JessicaO, I am also wondering about this program. Not sure if you saw this pdf but it lists all the courses that we would be taking: http://registrar.humberc.on.ca/ride2011/doc/admission/shs/SecondEntryBrochure.pdf

I haven't heard a lot about it though so any feedback would be really helpful!

I put Psychology as a second choice so that I had an option if I didn't get in to nursing right away (nursing is still my end goal). When I applied to my first undergrad though you were allowed a third choice as some schools and they only considered your third choice if you didn't get in to your first or second choice (I think...? It was years ago, I may be wrong).

Interesting, I would still call the school just to confirm anything. It's so much easier than waiting back for an email!

How does UofT calculate GPA for acceptances? Is it based on just the last 10 courses we have taken?

Yup! Last 10 courses

Western should be sending out another round of acceptances today or tomorrow!

Thanks!! Do you know if they look at all at your other grades from other years/courses other than those 10?

Just wondering why not Nipissing? It has smaller class sizes and the same placements as UofT.

They look at your prerequisite courses as well, if they are included or not in your last 5.0 credits/10 half courses!

For those who got a conditional acceptance to York, does it specifically say on your admission decision letter/application status on myfile?

Right before the transfer credit blurb, for me it says admission conditions. The condition is to get a B+ in the last year. Double check this section, if not maybe you have no conditions?!

On their site their admission requirements are to have a cGPA of a 6 on their scale or a B, and a B+ or 7 on their scale for the last year. It also states to have specific courses and at least a B on the york scale in them. So just to be safe even if your letter doesn't state any conditions I would probably keep these admission criteria in mind!

Did you accept your offer?

I don’t see any conditions, but true just to be on the safe side. Ye I accepted it. It says admission-final.

So I was really keen on going to Nipissing when I got accepted, however, after doing a lot of research and speaking to a few people I decided the program just wasn't right for me. I learned that you do not have any specific courses per se. For example, pharmacology is not taught as a course but as a day or week long in class session and then you would be responsible for memorizing all the drugs that are relevant to your placement. It seems a lot of the regular nursing themes are taught through case studies instead of actual courses. On top of this, there are also no exams or few of them, and no required textbooks. It is a very self-directed learning approach which is not really my style. Finally, their placements are with 3 affiliations, which I find kind of limits the diversity of other placements at other programs. It's all a personal choice though and I am sure whichever nursing school we decide to accept will be a great experience!
