Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2019

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone,

I am currently a third year York University student hoping to apply for second entry nursing at York

only next year (yes I am going through the strike).

Since applications open in November, I thought it would be best to get this forum started. I am hoping to get more insight into the program and I hope current and past nursing students would share their views on the program and how job searching went. Also, what nursing specialties do most York nursing graduates enter as I am hoping to get into public health. Furthermore, share your insights on Humber, McMaster, U of T, Trent, Queens, Western, Ottawa and Nippissing. (I think that is all) and don't forget to include your acceptance GPAs.

No problem ? In first semester there’s class 9am-4pm on Monday; the Tuesday/Wednesday schedule depends on whether you have geriatrics or maternity first and when your 2 hour lab slot is. The class would be 12-3pm either Tuesday or Wednesday and the lab is sometime after Tuesday’s morning class or sometime on Wednesday. For example, you could have a lab Wednesday morning and class Wednesday afternoon and be done at 11am on Tuesday. Some people had class in the afternoon on Tuesday and their lab right after and therefore had no classes/lab on Wednesday. You can’t change your class time but some people switch lab sections when it’s mutually beneficial ? Clinical is typically 7am-3pm for geriatrics and one 12 hour day (either Thurs or Fri) for maternity

In second semester you have a patho/pharm course that runs Jan.-Jun., a community nursing course that’s Jan.-Apr. and then you rotate through the three placement rotations (mental health, acute care and pediatrics). Class is 10am-3pm Monday until community nursing ends (then it’s just 1-3pm). Tuesday is 9am-3pm and Wednesday is 9-11 or 10-12 depending on which placement you’re in. Acute care requires 2 hours of hospital time Wednesday afternoon and pediatrics has a 10 hour Thursday clinical day

this is super helpful, thank you!

Hi everyone - congratulations to all who've received offers and to those who haven't yet, just remember that it's still very early on in the process so no need to worry, your offer will come as well! Keep in mind they send them out all the way up until June.

I received McMaster earlier this week but not U of T or York yet. I applied last year to York and U of T and got conditional offers to both but I was not able to start in Sep 2018 because I couldn't complete the physiology course that my offers were conditional upon by the deadline, unfortunately. This time around, I've completed all the courses and maintained my GPA that I got in with last year, so I'm hoping to get into York and U of T as well again this year. Which brings me to my question to you guys - For those considering York, U of T, or Mac, what are your reasons for having a preference towards one school over the over? I've tried looking into this online but I'm finding very limited information.

Based on the information I have, I'm leaning towards U of T because I want to work at Sick Kids/ in pediatric nursing upon graduation, and I've been told that because U of T does placements at Sick Kids it'll be a good way to get in to that. Additionally U of T is the only program that I noticed does not include a biochem course (Mac has it as a prereq and York has it included in the program) - chem has never been my strong suit so that is a plus for me. The big drawback to U of T of course is the cost - double that of York or Mac.

Mac and York both sound like great programs as well and I'm sure they have great placements and provide great opportunity to work in the pediatrics after graduation. Which is why I'm struggling to decide between the 3. If anyone has any insight to any of these programs, please share!

In terms of program intensity, I would assume all 3 programs are equally challenging and work intensive but if anyone has insight into that as well it would also be helpful to know!

For those who got a conditional acceptance to York, does it specifically say on your admission decision letter/application status on myfile?

Anyone heard from UofT today???

It says admitted on myfile and you get an admission letter

My letter doesn’t specify any conditions tho?

Right before the transfer credit blurb, for me it says admission conditions. The condition is to get a B+ in the last year. Double check this section, if not maybe you have no conditions?!

On their site their admission requirements are to have a cGPA of a 6 on their scale or a B, and a B+ or 7 on their scale for the last year. It also states to have specific courses and at least a B on the york scale in them. So just to be safe even if your letter doesn't state any conditions I would probably keep these admission criteria in mind!

Did you accept your offer?

Does this mean I didn't get in? :(

Hmmmm that's confusing. Did you apply to Life Sciences as well? Or did they just randomly put that under your joinid?

Did they put Life Sciences as an alternative choice for you as well? That's strange how they would do that to some people and not everyone.

No they didn't! But it says the first part about potentially getting my second choice even thought that's the only program I applied for. So you're sure you never out that as another program choice? If you didn't I would just phone the admissions office for sure.
