I really wonder how they're going to do this. When experienced RN's have been waiting for years to get full time in some places......
Maybe we should all move to BC where they just got a 15% raise over 3 years. Top end RN will make $90,000/year!

Is that for real?
I calculated it out..
A top RN right now (non-managerial position) is making 33$/hr approx..
33 x 1.15 = 37.95$/hr
Assuming theres 40 hrs a week of work and full work through out the entire year (no overtime... and 52 weeks) = 37.95x40x52 = 79,000$/yr
Wow.. I can see its actually possible with a couple months of heavy overtime..

Does this incentive include RPN's. As a future nurse, I am finding that the RPN is left at the sidelines. Is this true or is it just my perception?

I think RPNs are a lot more limited in opportunities than RNs.
I don't see how the government is going to do this. I also wonder what kind of jobs they are talking about? Full time med-surg up north might not draw new grads.

I'm a Pn student as well.. and from what *i* gather, this "garentee" does include us.
Now the one article that i read had said something to the effect of "it may not be the full-time you want, but it'll be a full-time job"....

In a perfect world all new grads would be granted full time jobs. But as we all know, governments make promises with NO intentions to keep them. I would not count my chickens before they hatch in this circumstance. What about those grads this year??? Where are their jobs? When I graduated, I did receive full time, but only "up to six months". It was at the hospital I did my consolidation (where I put in an extra 45 hours, in hopes the managers would see I was interested in working there). There was a perm full time posting which I did not receive...go figure. They hired someone who had more 'experience', but not in the speciality I was consolidating in. Sometimes managers need to go out on a limb and give the new grads a chance. I think if they did, then more full time jobs would be available to new grads.

"guaranteed a full time job"
Yes, but in what areas? The jobs no one else wants with the hours no one else wants? If someone wants to work in a certain area, they have to take a crappy job they don't want for a long time until they can (if ever) move to the area they actually are interested in. That sucks.

I was at the press conference on that day at U OF T and as much as they wanted to prove that they are confident in what they are saying, it was evident that they were totally clueless in how to carry it out.
Probably guaranteed jobs without choice or satisfaction. They said guaranteed jobs but I didnt here benefits from Mr. Smitherman. It would be quite interesting when this all plays out.
Cant wait

They are clueless on how to carry it out. I don't know why the health minister said that, or even if he KNEW he was going to say that. I can make a true guarantee... that is not going to happen.
I have a friend that works for the mnistry of Health. She told me they were all so pissed off he said that . ( They being anyone who is NOT a politician and has anything to do with the healthcare system). The jobs are not there and it would be a complicated mess to implement it. ONA is really pissed off that he said that.
What an irresponsible thing to say!

Well I did get the info from the media but they did say a 'top end' nurses regular salary would be $90,000, not including overtime. I thought BC just negotiated a new collective agreement?
