Online Pre Reqs?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I live in San Diego. I am trying to complete my nursing preqs but having a hard trying to get in to the classes. Is there a college where I can take all my prereqs online.

My physiology instructor told us he was present one time at start of online registration, I believe in the admin office. He literally saw that his physiology class filled in ten minutes. You can't put your life on hold every semester. It also costs money to wait with no progress toward your career. Diligence does not get it at the schools in my area. There are also no provisions for those who have been waiting three years over three months. It is up for grabs every term. I used to attend a school where graduating seniors got priority. Not in this neck of the woods today.

As I have said twice, if you can afford going out of state online, go for it. I was simply pointing out the cost impact. I do not plan on debating this issue. Further, I do not know your local, but I have been going to school in SD for some time and have never seen a class fill up in ten minutes.

Since we are talking about this, my pet peeve is EOPS students getting priority registration (meaning early reg). Why should the financially or verbally impaired get a leg up in the school system? To top it off, I pay taxes each year while the EOPS students are still a burden to the tax payer, now that is not fair. I am all for helping the less fortunate but not when it affects admittance into a classroom based on socio status. In fact, living here in SD, many of the student I interact with live across the border, do not pay any state of fed taxes yet manage to claim Ca residency and at the same time can bump me from a class due to being in EOPS. Ugh, ya got me going. :)

It can be frustrating. For the last A&P class I took, we were allowed to start registering at 0600, the class I wanted was filled by 0603, the class I got into was filled by 0607 and the rest of the other 6 sections were filled by 0625.

I'm glad I'm finished with that!:uhoh3:

I never said I didn't agree with you! Who wants to pay $1200 for a class when it could have been $104? Those schools rake in the money off the backs of people who can't or don't want to wait forever. And my physiology instructor did not impress me as being someone to engage in putting out misinformation. Don't even talk about EOPS or coming across the border! My BP meds only work so far!!

Because its the right thing to do. If we don't help people break the cycle they will still be dependent and trapped in the poverty cycle long after you have finished your degree and entered practice.

Not everyone has the advantages that you have as an individual. Sometimes we have to take some extra steps collectively to help others.

I went to 4 different schools to finish my prerequisites and drove 500 miles a week for a semester to finish up my requirements to enter nursing school. I could take those steps because I had a job and a reliable vehicle that made it possible. An EOPS student may not have the same capacity to make those sacrifices.

The lesson I learned was make the personal sacrifices needed to achieve the goal I wanted/needed to achieve. If need be travel to where you can get the needed courses or take the class online if accepted by your list of application schools.

I always do early registration. It means I have to pay my bill way ahead of time but I don't have to worry about not getting the classes I need. They should be sending early registration dates for Summer session any day now and shortly thereafter, early registration notices for Fall will go out. Funny thing, is even when regular registration rolls around, there are still many spots left.

I was starting to wonder if its worth it paying for classes so early when there are still many spots left at regular registration time.

I think I worded my sentiments badly in my previous comment about EOPS (EOPS program's primary goal is to encourage the enrollment, retention and transfer of students handicapped by language, social, economic and educational disadvantages). Let me try again. I am all for seeing everyone having the opportunity to attend college and I am all for them receiving financial assistance and help with purchasing books and lunches. Okay, that part I am all for and have no problem with. What bothers me is this; Some of the CC's in San Diego give priority registration to EOPS students which mean that they are allowed to register a week or several days before the general student population. Now the financial aid is a good thing but for me to miss out on getting into a class based on my background seems very unfair.

If we look at the California Constitution Article 1 ( Declaration of RIghts) Section 31:

_____________________________________________________________________

(a) The State shall not discriminate against, or grant

preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of

race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of

public employment, public education, or public contracting.

To me, EOPS clearly violates this article of our constitution. I am all for helping

thy neighbor and this should be done so with a color blind eye. My bottom line is this;

all students should be treated equally and all with the same opportunities, this includes class

registration. To do otherwise is a breach in fairness.

Now I am done preaching, or is it complaining. Have a nice day. :)

I'm qualify for the EOPS Program because I came from the low income family. I believe that EOPS doesn't violates anything at all because what they did is the right thing:yeah::up:. The reason that EOPS students get the priority for registration is because they're in one of the special program. At my school there are other kind of special programs available too such as Aspire Program, Affirm Program and Enlace Program. And all of these programs give the student the first chance to register for class before the New, Returning and Continuing students. So if one wants to get this priority then they have to enrolled in one of the above program at their school, check if your school offered it and one must qualify the requirements in order to accept into the program. So, overall it does make sense why those students have the 1st priority for registration because they're in the special program, that's why. And those that don't is because they're not in any of the school special program.

I think everyone understands that these students were registering early because they're in a program....I think the point being made is that he didn't think it was fair that folks in those programs had early registration privileges.

I want to add something: It's like if there is an opening position in a hospital, I believe that they give their employees the first priority to apply for the position first before they let the outsider applicants to do so, right...correct me if I'm wrong. Now I think this is not fair either because everyone should treated equally but it does make sense because they're already working at the hospital so they have that opportunity first just like those students that enrolled in one of the special program like EOPS. So does that is clear now, I hope:)

Well, not quite. Anyone could work at the hospital (if qualified of course....but they are qualifications that can be earned...not the situation you were born into)....there are specific requirements to be in one of the programs you spoke of.

I'm a CNA looking for job and when I trying to applying for this position online at this one hospital but I'm not allowed to apply for it because they said it's for current employees only at their hospital.
