NYU ABSN Spring 2019

I am currently looking for BSN programs to apply to and came across NYU and was wondering if I should apply or not considering I have a low GPA :arghh: . If you don't mind me asking what are your stats?

I am also applying to the Spring 2019 cohort! Would you mind sharing your stats? I'm trying to see how competitive of an applicant I am.

Does anyone know when the app opens? Every time I go to the app site nothing comes up. Thanks

Hey All -

Applications open in August(ish). The first deadline (priority) is in October. I wouldn't worry about your GPA - you should apply, regardless, as your chances are dependent on your whole application. If you look as previous years here on allnurses, there is a wide range of accepted GPAs. You can offset a poor undergrad GPA with a good prerequisite GPA, a good essay, and good recommendations. Don't count yourself out before it has begun!

I am also applying for Spring 2019, along with MGHIHP and Regis. My background:

BA 3.9 / MA 3.8 / MS 3.7

Prerequisites: 3.8

Former EMT / couple years in psychiatry departments / couple years in disaster response / currently in HIV Prevention and disaster prep.

My prerequisites will be exactly 10 years old at the time of application, so, we'll see if that is a problem!

Thank you for starting this thread - I am planning to apply to NYU for Spring 2019 entry as well. I too will have to complete prerequisites before starting the accelerated curriculum, so while we will not be in the same cohort, I was hoping you could help me with a few questions:

1. How many prerequisites did you have left when you applied to the second degree program? Which ones?

2. How long did it take you to complete those prerequisites at NYU?

3. Does NYU accept AP credit for prerequisites? I have reached out to them but have not yet received a response.

4. Are you living on campus?

Just wanted to let you know for 4 - if you are referring to AP credits in High School, then no; it must be bachelor's level.

Hi everyone! I am also applying to Spring 2019 cohort but I am so nervous about my low GPA. I didn't know what I wanted to be when I started undergrad. so as you will see, up until my junior year I pretty much let my academics split. I regret it so much now but hey, you just gotta keep moving forward. I know NYU take the holistic approach when reviewing applications but do you guys think I even have a chance? Here are my stats:

Undergraduate Cum. GPA: 2.732

Nutrition: A

Prerequisite from Community College: 3.952

A&P I: A

A&P II: A-

Microbio:A

Stats:A

Gen. Psych: A

Dev. Psych: A

Gen. Chem+Lab I: A

Gen. Chem+Lab II: Progress

Orgo Chem: Fall 2018

Dean's list: Fall and Spring semester

Honor Society

I know Chem II and Orgo are not part of the prereq requirements but what the heck, hopefully I will ace both of them just to boost my GPA a little. Anything helps at this point. I also worked at/volunteered at a variety of places as well as working as a CNA for 7 months and getting certified as an EMT-B recently. I haven't used my EMT-B card as of yet since I want to fully dedicate my time to acing my summer Chem. course and start writing an amazing(hopefully) personal statement. I think I also have two pretty good letters of rec!

Would anyone happen to know if its easier to get into the Fall cohort or the Spring cohort, if there even is a distinction.

NYU - and many other ABSN programs - are typically quite good at looking at the larger picture. There are people from other years who have had similar undergrad GPAs to yours and have been admitted. Your pre-requisites are excellent so do not worry there.

Your personal statement may afford you the opportunity to talk about your undergrad experience, should that feel relevant and appropriate. If not, just work on a great statement that lets your interest shine through, along with your current qualifications. Two great letters of rec will certainly help you.

I would say be confident in yourself and do not limit yourself with doubt.

The spring semester is typically an easier entry point in many programs as fewer people are able (academics, specifically) to matriculate 'mid year'. It is less relevant for professionals, but Fall seems to be the more commonly pursued / or at least more traditional for entry.

Thanks for the confidence boost! I really needed it. I was scrolling through old posts on allnurses and I was mind-blown at the fact that people with much higher GPAs like 3.7 with like 3.9 prereq and a ton of volunteer experience were rejected. You are right though, it does seems like they are good at looking at the larger picture as people with much lower GPA do get admitted every so often. I'll just try my luck and hope for the best. Of course! Grades aren't everything, truly. They look for character, ability, interest - I know a couple of folks with high GPAs that have struggled to get into programs; their attitudes often bled into their writing, or their recommendations were stale. Not to say that a high GPA isn't worth some salt, but it is in no way everything.

My other plan is to have everything sent by September 1st if this summer class takes too much of time away from writing my statement.

Even though they say to have everything in by Sept. 15th, I really hope it doesn't come down to the latter option because I feel like a month into the opening will greatly decrease my chances.

Considering that all my materials are ready and all I need to do is request transcripts, then yes. Within the first week at least.

It is tough to try to analyze timing. I really have no insight on that one - I imagine they are pros by now and know how to fill spaces equally and fairly over the time period. Some people will decline as well! Going to the open house may give you a chance to ask for advice. I remember reading that it is a good idea to go to the OH.

I think your August plan sounds great - make sure you know when grades are posted. In some schools there is quite a delay.
