National University (San Diego) Cohort 56: October 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Greetings! Wondering if there are others who will be applying/have applied for Cohort 56, which would begin October 2018!

If anyone is out there, hopefully this thread will a serve as a place to ask questions, provide insight/advice, vent, celebrate, wallow, etc. :)

For my situation, my prereq's are completed, and have recently completed the TEAS. I submitted the application (which was crazy quick and easy to my surprise), and am just waiting for a date to take my proctored essay.

Hope to speak with fellow applicants of cohort 56 soon!

Hello! I applied for Cohort 55 but didn't make it. I got alternate instead so I'll be in Cohort 56!

For your proctored essay, I'd say you schedule an appointment with the writing center and make the most out of it!! It'll really help you a lot in preparing for the essay!

Wishing you all the best!!

Hello! I too applied for Cohort 55 and got alternate instead! Which I super excited about since this was my last try to apply. I would say try to score high on your TEAS and aim high on the essay as well. I went from 3.2 essay score to a 4.75/5.

Good luck to everyone!!!

Hey! I recently applied to Cohort 56 as well! I finished my last prereq in February so I've just been studying for the TEAS, which I'm a bit nervous about. I think I'm going to go ahead and take it as soon as possible, at least to see what the actual exam is like. How did you feel about the TEAS? Was it as difficult as it seems?

Good luck to you all!

Hey! I had the same mindset, I wanted to take the TEAS as soon as possible just to see how it was formatted and how I can manage my time with the different sections of questions. I personally thought that the TEAS wasn't terrible at all! Definitely put in some time to study up on Anatomy and Physiology, since a good majority of the science section is based on that. I also went in thinking that the english section wouldn't be too bad, but it turned out to be my lowest scored section haha. I'm happy with the overall score I got, but I definitely could have made it easier on myself by studying way more. The study manual I used was called ATI TEAS Secrets by Mometrix. It has 3 practice tests and has a good amount of review info. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm sure you'll do great!

Huge congrats to the both of you for getting alternate, that's big news! I did have a few questions about the essay portion, and hope that you two would have some insight about it:

1. When do they let you know about your essay date?

2. Is there a time limit for the essay (I'm assuming it's an hour?)

3. Is it hand-written or is it typed?

I really want to make sure I do well on this part, since this portion is pretty indicative of whether I'm accepted or not. Any advice helps!! Thanks again, and big congrats to the both of you once more =]

Hey!

For your questions:

1. you'll know your essay date after the application deadline. Elizabeth will send it through email... as far as I can remember I had 3-4 weeks to prepare for my test at Nationals.

2. Yes there is a 1 hr time limit for the essay. it is a 5 paragraph essay (intro, 3 body p., and a conclusion) For the prompt, they will give it to you on the day of your test. I'd say you schedule an appt. with the writing center before your test date because they're going to tell you what to expect in the essay and they will also give you some prompts that NU had used in the past.

3. you're going to type it in MS Word using APA style.

------

Just to give you an idea, my overall score was:

3.86 GPA

83.3 Teas

3.5 Essay

Total: 85.92

Cohort 55's cut off:

acceptance: 86.05

alternate: 84.++

Try to score as high as you can on the teas and the essay because it is very competitive. Goodluck to you!! :) If you have more questions feel free to ask

Hey!

In my case I took the teas 3 times before I took it at National because I wanted to have a high score before I test at National so that I can submit which score is higher. I ended up with an 83.3 for my teas score. When studying for the teas, remember your A&P's, and do lots of practice test this is what I did that really helped me a lot especially for reading!! don't underestimate the reading part because I find it the most difficult in the teas. for studying I used the ATI Manual and Momentrix book. Goodluck!!! Hope this helps you :)

Hey! I too wanted to be prepared, I schedule an apt to test for the TEAS to see how the test was... I started with a score of 52% combined average. I tested as many times as I could to turn in my highest test score. In the end my highest score was an 85.6% I tested many tomes... because you don't always get the same test, there are about four versions of the test. I eventually got each test at least once. Some are harder than others... I would say test as many times as you can.. even with an 85.6% I tested again the day of my essay to see if I can increase my score.... nope got the difficult test that time.. so I turned in my 85.6%

As for studying I studied 6-8 hours everyday for a month ..some weekends off I got a 52% . I tried again crammed two days before I retested and scored an 82% .. so its all in how you study.. I retain things better when I cram .. vs studying for a long period of time. Good luck !!!
