Drexel ACE Prerequisites - Univ of Phoenix?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi, I'm interested in applying for the Fall 2014 ACE BSN program, but I have at least 8 prerequisite courses I need to take before then.

Due to my full-time job, I think it would be a lot easier to fulfill these requirements through an online university, specifically University of Phoenix, even if it costs a little bit more money. The Drexel website says that they will accept credit from a university as long as it's accredited, but I am not sure exactly which courses they would accept.

I'm also not sure of which of the courses that I've taken as an undergraduate will go towards the prerequisites. For example, I've taken a Contemporary Performance course that I'm not sure will fulfill the Public Speaking/Communications elective requirement.

I've looked through this forum and all I can find are posts about people who have already or are waiting for acceptance letters from ACE, but nothing on prerequisites and how to know whether credits will transfer.

I've reached out to the undergraduate office, but I have not received a response.

Below are the courses offered by University of Phoenix that would be relevant. I feel like the second group would be transferrable but my only question is whether PSY280 or PSY375 would satisfy the developmental psychology requirement. (Difference of $495)

Course Descriptions for PSY280 and 375:

Life Span Human Development - psy375 (3 credits)

This course focuses on a historical view of human development leading to the current life span approach to form an understanding of the developing individual, and it explores influences on human development, ranging from individual models to cross-cultural groups. Emphasis is given to personality, social, intellectual, and physical development, and the major theories used to describe how people change throughout their life span.

Human Growth & Development - psy280 (3 credits)

This course is a study of the development of the individual from conception through adulthood. Theories and factual content underlying current thinking and research are examined, as well as the processes and influences affecting the developing person. The focus is on biological, social, emotional, and intellectual aspects across the lifespan, and individual application is emphasized.

So here are my questions:

1. Will Drexel ACE accept credits from University of Phoenix?

2. Will they accept a Contemporary Performance course in Theater as a public speaking/communication elective?

3. How do I reach someone at Drexel to confirm all this? Is there a process where prospective applicants can confirm what is transferrable and what isn't?

4. From the courses above, would PSY280 or PSY375 satisfy the developmental psychology requirement?

Thanks for your help!

1. Will ACE accept credits from University of Phoenix?

In general, I believe Drexel will accept online credits from online universities. You can look if they are accredited at this site:

Search Institutional Accreditation System

University of Phoenix is accredited. However, I would also add it's very expensive. Nowadays many community colleges have much cheaper online options so check your local colleges' websites if they offer online courses.

2. Will they accept a Contemporary Performance course in Theater as a public speaking/communication elective?

Not sure about that. Was it a Communications subject? If so, it may apply. It's possible to apply and finish courses after acceptance I believe so you could always try that route. I think a Computer Science course also can fulfill that elective.

3. How do I reach someone at Drexel to confirm all this? Is there a process where prospective applicants can confirm what is transferrable and what isn't?

I tried the same thing but got a reply that they will not confirm until an application is in. You might want to ask other universities that do give free prerequisites checks. Chances are if the courses are good elsewhere, they'll be good for Drexel.

4. From the courses above, would PSY280 or PSY375 satisfy the developmental psychology requirement?

My guess would be that PSY280 would satisfy it. They other course is an upper-level course that looks more sociological in nature. In other words, how outside forces are influencing human development.

Thank you so much for your response! This was incredibly helpful. I probably would have to take another course to fill that elective. And I will definitely check out the online community college course option as I did find Phoenix to be expensive though the convenience of taking the courses online made it seem worth it.

Thanks again for your help!

Ive taken a lot of the pre reqs online at communite college which was a lot cheaper and very easy to finish them.

The life span psych is the one I took and it was an excellent class which was online and I got an A at Gloucester County College. I would definately recommend that college for online classes. I don't live in Gloucester County but I just pay the out of county rate which is still very cheap.

Its hard to get an official credit eval from them especially if you havent already applied. Once you apply you get an advisor so he maybe able to give you some insite.

Best of Luck!!

I haven't looked up Gloucester County College yet but would you say their courses are "easy-ish?" I just need to get a stats course out of the way and I dread it. Thanks!
