Oh my! I can see how frustrated you are and I must tell you, you made me laugh! I'm just picturing the theater major teaching graduate nursing theory. Yikes! And I know what you mean about being sick of papers. I'm only in my first theory class and I'm sick of the writing and the footnoting and all of that. It will be a while before I get to the "good stuff". Ugh

Yes they had four questions that they want to know the answers too. I just wonder what more they want to know. When I try to tell them about myself and answer those questions, it's hard to keep it under 3 pages. It's supposed to be 2-3 pages. I am nervous because they say the essay is your chance to show them who you are. I don't want to ramble on about things they don't care about.

Any advice for graduate school admissions essay? Aside from professional achievements and goals....what are they really for and how personal should I get?

Hey mtsteelhorse! We meet again! I too am dreading my stats course. I have to take a gradaute level stats course and I must say..............17 years ago when I took my undergrad stats course I barely got through it. I dread this!!

OK Zenman! Where exactly is the land of enchantment? I have no idea! I am still in the process of applying and ......I'm starting to question somethings. I am thinking that it wouldn't be a bad idea to be FNP as well as psych NP. Just to open more doors. Or course I'd prefer psych. So, I am thinking that I will got for psych NP but plan to get certified as soon as I'm done in FNP as well. The FNP degree mills are all over the place so that would be like an 18month thing if not less. I think it would be easier to get FNP after psych then the other way around. Psych certificates are not offered aroudn here that I can see. At least not without having to be doctorate. Which reminds me. Since I'm not in a program yet.....how nervous do you think I should be about this whole "NPS needing to be doctorates by 2015". Some people say not to worry. Others say to worry and go for doctorate. I really don't want to.

Hi mtsteelhorse! Great points you're bringing up about working in a jail setting. I have never worked in a jail setting. I worked inpatient pscyh as well as on medical/psych locked units. I never felt unsafe. However, you have to be on your toes though. When it comes to jails and inpatient psych, they are "locked up" or inpatient because they are unstable. Otherwise, they wouldn't be locked up. In other words, the very fact that a person is inpatient psych should give a professional reason to use caution. You never know what could happen so you have to be prepared for unpredictible mood swings.....anger outbursts....triggers....flashbacks.......that sort of thing. You always have to be on your toes in terms of....personal space....distance from patient......out in open....close to exit way. I took a course years ago in crisis prevention and it was really helpful in teaching me how to recognize a potentially dangerous situation and then get out or divert it before it became out of control. A course like that could help you. Question: would you be willing to share the experience that you went through that has caused you to be more fearful now? For PsychNP............how long have your worked as psych NP? What do you like and dislike about it? Do you work in a rural or city setting? THanks for your input!!

OK so I know my passion is in pscyh and I'm in the processes of getting my application and letters of recommendations and all of that for a program for PFMHNP..........however....I'm a little nervous because I looked up NP jobs in Illinois and where there are about 100 postings for NPs....there were TWO for psych NPs. Should I be worried or just trust my gut and go forward with my passion....which is psych?

This is for Myelin....as well as again, I can't send private messages. I have some questions for you again. Do you know what states allow psych NP to provide one on one therapy? I'm assuming that all states do not allow this. Also, is it similar to FNP where you can prescribe meds but certain meds need to come from an MD? Do you have to run everything you do past an MD? How much autonomy do you really have?

I haven't applied to a PFMHNP program yet but I'm in the process. I'm not going into this expecting to get rich. I am married with three kids. My husband works full time and I went down to three days a week after my third child. Since I'm home several days during the week.....watching kiddie shows and doing laundry etc......I figured now would be a good time to get going on my masters. If I was a single mothertrying to make as much money as I could, I would definitly do FNP and I'd want to work in the ER. However, thank God I am able to base my decision on what I want to do, not on what I HAVE to do ya know?

Myelin, I tried to email you in response to what you told me about getting my ANP first and then going into PMHNP but here's my issue. I have been in nursing for fifteen years now and deep down inside I have always known that psych is the place for me. I can do the ANP but I really want to focus on psych. Do you think I HAVE to get my ANP or is going to my PMHNP OK? I would love so much to work with kids, teens and adults in outpatient settings. Diagnosing, med managment, therapy, group therapy. I would also love to teach psych to undergard students or nursing students. I have three kids and I'm not getting any younger. Just not sure I want to go to school for a long time. If I become an ANP and THEN do the PMHNP how long after ANP would it take me to get into psych?
