Online MSN?

Published

I'm starting an online MSN program next week at Walden University with a specialization in Nursing Education. Any other online MSN-ers out there? What about Walden? Any others?

Specializes in nursing education.

I am enrolled in Walden's inline RN to MSN program with a specialization on in nurs. ed. I enjoy it and it it not too labor intensive. I am able to continue teaching fulltime and still spend time with my family.

Of course there is no scholarship.....i am going to check out Nebraska!

Hi 83StudentNurse - There was a lot of education curriculum at Nebraska Methodist, but that was what I was looking for, since I teach nursing. But there was enough of the advanced nursing to keep you into it, such as pathophysiology, which was really exciting, even online. I also liked the idea of a mix, but you need to know how to teach, and also the advanced nursing also. There are two practicum, one in an area you want to explore, and the other as the instructor, sort of like student teaching. Good luck, it is really worth it!

I would really echo the worth of education courses. Before my school (OHSU) got a MSN in Education several of the PhD students agitated for some education courses as we knew we'd wind up teaching and gee, wouldn't it be nice if we had a clue about what we were doing? Plus, having Chris Tanner on faculty seems like it would be a waste not to utilize her knowledge and expertese.

Anyway, I had 3 educational courses (curriculum development, learning assessment and clinical teaching). We are at a real crossroads in some ways with education. As our practice gets more and more complex we can try and shove more and more content down students throats or we can take different approaches learning.

As an aside, if anyone is anywhere near Portland, Oregon (i.e. Washington, Idaho, Northern California), OHSU's SON has a great annual program the Northwest Nursing Education Institute http://www.ohsu.edu/son/ce/nnei.shtml Consider checking it out if you have time/opportunity

I currently attend South University online pursuing a MSN. Online education has its advantages and challenges for sure!

I just happened upon the Mansfield University online MSN in Nursing Education. Anyone know of them? I had never even heard of that school.

What accreditation should I look for in the online programs? I've seen at least two from universities in my area, and then "less expensive" programs online. I'm looking to do a MSN with education as the focus.

I'm curious about programs which do not require a GRE exam or make specific rules about GPA's. Is that a clue they are not accredited?

How sticky would the potential employer be about the program I graduated from? I have a BSN already. Thanks.:nurse:

Hilundlass,

I'm attending Liberty U. online for my MSNEd.

I did not have to do take a GRE but there was some GPA cut off for nursing courses.

I'll be in my 5th & 6th classes starting in August.

I find it to be very challenging and time consuming. But, with the help of the professors I've done well.

Best of Luck,

Accreditation is very important to know when inquiring about possible MSN programs. This proves that the degree you have earned is from a reputable institution. Also whatever college or university you want to teach at will look at this degree and the accreditation to know that it is from a worthwhile school of nursing. I have known other instructors who have gotten a degree from a questionable institution and now cannot get another job with that degree because no one accepts it. Ask the school what accreditation they have. Ask about regional accreditation, such as in the Northwest, we have the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, a regional postseconadary accrediting agency. Regional accreditation assures the quality of the educational experience and facilitates the transfer of credit to state and national colleges and universities.

GRE I really hated that test. Look at the state of Nebraska. Nebraska Methodist College does not require a GRE, and is a great institution that works with nurses.

Good luck!

I am in my second year at Walden University, doing the MSN in education. The program is accredited, and very good. Some of the courses are labor intensive, but well worth the effort. I was an associate degree nurse for almost 22 years before I got my BSN online at WVU. Am continuing on with my MSN through Walden, WVU does not offer a specialty in education. I love the instructors at Walden, they will talk with you anytime you have a question or problem.

I am currently attending South University MSN program for Nurse Educator. So far has been rewarding as well as labor intensive.

How is the Liberty program going? I'm looking at it and another MSN program and haven't decided yet. About how many hours per week are you spending on course work? How is the coverage of material? Any glitches, that you have seen so far. They have been very nice and fast to get back with me about questions and so forth.

I saw some negative comments on a college rating board, but then some of the comments were shallow such as "not enough night life in Lynchburg, VA" that I don't know whether to put much faith in them as a whole.
