which client is most likely to receive opioids for extended periods of time?

a. a client with fibrolyalgia

b. a client with progressive pancreatic cancer

Fibromyalgia or pancreatic cancer.......What do you think? They both will have the possibility of taking medicine for extended periods of time. Which of these patients are managed with limited narcotics and other medications and treatments versus requiring narcotics as there are no other treatments available or effective.

What do you think?

Specializes in Acute, Adult Gerontology.

Cancer coz they will be in chronic pain for a while, Fibromyalgia can be treated with less stronger pain medications that can relieve the pain the patient is

going through. basically, the cancer patient needs stronger medication as opposed to

the later

yes, cancer pain generally worsens with disease progression and the use of opioids is more generous. fibromyalgia is more likely to be treated with non-opiod and adjuvant

medications

fibromyalgia is not properly treated with opioids at all. if you give your faculty this answer, be prepared to be asked what they are treated with, so i leave that to you to look up.
