My 15+ years at the bedside is coming to an end in less than one week. I feel a sense of relief that this nightmare will soon be over for me. I start a new job in a few weeks and I’m never looking back. I’m excited to start a new chapter of my life.

Just curious; why are you leaving bedside nursing? Probably obvious to most of us, but I would like to hear your particular reasons.

Congrats! I started in the cath/ep lab a few months ago and I love it. I do not miss bedside nursing or the BS that comes with it.

Gosh, there were so many reasons both professional and personal. Professional reasons were the nurse:patient ratios, short staffing, difficult patients/families, management, physical demands, inadequate pay, unit politics, and not feeling appreciated by management. Personal reasons were that I was tired of working every other weekend and holiday. I also felt that I wanted to expand my experience. But most importantly, being a bedside nurse was affecting me in a negative way. I am worthy to find a place that treats me well and appreciates my hard work.
I feel an overwhelming sense that I made the right decision. Maybe slightly dramatic, but I feel at peace now.

Congratulations!
(I actually worked in the Admit Transfer Center and left the beside about 12 years ago and hated it and went back to the beside six months later. I trust you'll have a better experience.)

What did you hate about it?

I missed the patient contact, missed my coworkers, found it boring, and didn't like sitting behind a desk all day. It was a good thing to learn about myself.
Sometimes in the stress of things, I do question my life choices and think one day I'll switch to something less stressful but for now no regrets.
