Second go-round of NC2, got a B today. Thanks in large part to finally treating my ADD !! Things made sense that never made sense before.
Two nursing exams left -- NC5 and NC7 ... then adult developmental psychology (when I clepped lifespan years ago it didn't include the adult stuff so I have to do this), ENG 102 (signed up for internet class at local college this spring and -- I'll be done! Except for the CPNE of course ...
I'm starting to feel like I am making PROGRESS ... this time last year everything was "on hold" because of family problems, I only started the exams in August. Now if the money would just show up for the next couple... ah... there's always something.
I've got to say I'm impressed with how fast Excelsior processes these things. They got my scores for ASL from the local college on 12/8 and I received a notice yesterday that it would take 4-6 weeks -- but when I got online I see they have already processed the credits! Way to go Excelsior! Seems whenever I take an exam it shows up pretty quickly on my status report.
A little advice for present and prospective students who want to be SAFE RNs when they're done with this program. Cramming will get you short term results, but it will also stay in your short term memory bank. Meaning, later on when you might need that info in your practice, lo and behold, it may be gone. Please study according to any other school's standards, in a way that places the info you learn in your long term memory bank. Value your education that you are paying for...it doesn't have to merely be a means to an end. A safe and disciplined student means a safe and disciplined nurse. Ask yourself if you want to know the info to become a better and smarter nurse, or do you just want to pass that exam? I'd rather have the former take care of my loved ones. I certainly wouldn't want someone that brags about taking "pot shots" at answers on an exam...wouldn't want them taking pot shots at answers when it came to pt care.

Fortunately, after having gone 3/4 of the way through a traditioinal program with all prerequsites, even years after the fact most of my studying is, to me, review. If it were all, or even mostly, new information I for one am not made in a way that I could do this program.
Cramming for me involves memorizing the stuff that needs memorizing, the stuff that needs understanding I better understand or I wouldn't have gotten it the first time around, much less the second time. To me, who's who in nursing is a memorization list. I've always had a block when it came to studying, if I didn't see it, hear it, understand it, all the cramming in the world couldn't up my grade or help me pass a test. I can memorize the short list for a test -- I couldn't memorize the long list and retain it longer than it would take to go back to the beginning and read it again, much less long enough to drive the 2 hours in the rain from the mountains to the city to take the exam. And I do know that I'm not the one who said I ever took pot shots, but I did mention studying for just a few days before each test. NC7 is stuff I learned in LPN school before I dropped out to go to RN school, and again in RN school before the money ran out, and very little has changed. Ethics are still ethics, Florence Nightingale is still Florence Nightingale, and the difference between slander and libel hasn't changed.

Laurie- that wasn't directed at you...lol
Like I said I know I'm not the one who said I was taking pot shots (not that I haven't from time to time) but I did admit to exam by cramination.
I aced mine today (but could just as easily have done much worse when I think of the close calls where two answers seem to fit but you have to know the better one) and was wondering how our micro testing friend made out. And thinking how tired I am after waking up at 1:30 am and not really getting back to sleep -- I swear SOMEONE said they were taking micro on 12/23. Now I don't see it. Musta dreamt it inbetween naps last night.
Someone wrote about winter depression. This is a very real thing for people who live up north. This depression can make one a little short, a lot of fuzzy and very tired. Kind of like PMS that never quits.
The one thing I do which helps is turn on the lights, ALL of them. I also have a special light box in my kitchen. I don't think we would eat or wash dishes from November to April if it weren't for that light box.
I will be taking micro in a couple of months. I looked at the Excelsior study guide and it looks very boring to me. I will apply myself, but I can see how it can make a person a little crazy.
If I could take "pot shots" at some of the answers and still get a B says I must have pretty much known the material.A little advice for present and prospective students who want to be SAFE RNs when they're done with this program. If you can do the work you can do the work, and if you know your stuff you know your stuff. I am apparently just pretty darn sharp. Don't hate me because I'm smart.
Glad to know some of you seem to think NC 3 was the easiest while others say so many fail it the first time. I'm sure if it took me ten years to finish an ADN program some of the folks here would still find something to snort at. I also think it's funny som many give kudos to those who boast about studying for an exam for a maximum of three days...yet when I do it I'm a creep. Okay...
A good LPN will make a good RN. And I'm an excellent LPN.
I'm working on NC 4 right now. Decided to take it easy for awhile, just one test a week. Like learning those heart rhythms, it just soaks right in. They should call me spongebobbi...

Hey, I *had* been scheduled to take micro on 12-23 but took it on the 17th. I made a B. I'be made a B in everything so far, A&P, micro, NC 1 and NC 3. A B is alright with me. :rotfl:
As to the troll picture, I don't have it. However the narcissistic attitude seems oddly familiar. Someone said it best when they said "Do not feed the trolls" Look up narcisissism I think you may agree with my take on things. Sad situation. I and my son both with chronic illness may someday be treated by a narcisisstic nurse very scary thought.
I am going to concentrate on those who are full of wisdom and good old fashioned common sense. Great big thanks to those of you posessing these quality traits. Please don't be run off by narcisisstic attitudes. Those of us who truly care about the quality of our education need you.
One last note: A challange who can avoid feeding the narcisisstic need for attention. It doesn't belong here so lets not feed into it.

Yes, dear bellcollector, I saw some very interesting things when I did your reading you requested.
I must say, it is odd that you can make such judgements about someone you do not even know. Common sense and compassion should work both ways, yet I see there are so many who live by double standards. This message board is no exception.
Still I press on to NC 4...
