Hi! Im a 34 year old nursing student. I'll be 37 years old by the time i graduate. Some says that i'll be too old to be a nurse at 37! Does age really matter when applying for a nursing job?

Hey, I'm 59 years old and enrolled in an ADN program. No sweat! You'll do just fine!

Age is just a number. As long as you are persistent, dedicated, and focused on your goal, why not push through with your plans?

old can be any number...don't let yourself believe you're one...believe me, at 37, you're still hot. i've classmates here in the u.s. in their 40's 50's and even 60s. don't sweat it and go get your degree fast!

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I was 36 when I became an RN, 47 when I graduated from my advanced practice program. Good luck...

Specializes in ICU.

indeed, old can be any number!! i am just 22yrs old but consider myself "old", especially if i get to handle patients younger than me.:trout:

Age is just a state of mind. I was 51, and the oldest person in my class, when I graduated from nursing school last December, but I am extremely active...I ride horses like a seasoned cowgirl, lug 50 lb bags of feed, swim almost everyday, and I can still wear a bikini to the beach without grossing everyone out. It's all in staying active, exercising, eating the right things, and having a positive attitude. In school, I can honestly say that I was in better physical shape and had more energy than 90% of my younger classmates, and I always tried to encourage and inspire them.

Nursing is also my second career and something that I have always wanted to do. I don't think that I would have been able to handle the strenuous mental and physical work required of nurses had I not already been in a good place in my life. I also want to inspire and encourage my patients to be healthy and active, and I think the best way to do this is by being an example for them.

great!!! i'm not yet a nurse but i sure would like to be one just like you!

Never mind those numbers, just concentrate on your studies and you'll be an RN before you know it.

awww, i feel the authors sentiments.now i feel young! ok ok great thread...bottom line is, age is just a number, work hard, persevere and become the best nurse in our remaining years on this world (mush!! lol):icon_hug:

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

Started nursing school at 45, finished at 47, now 50 working in ER. Haven't you heard 50 is the new 30. It is my fourth career. I was not the oldest in my class by far. One guy was 65. Go for it. The median age for US nurses now is 45.

My co worker became a nurse at 51.You are never too old to follow your passion.Don't go to nursing school for the money because there is no money on it.Job security, yes.But the sad thing is that if and when you work in a place where maraming Pilipino dinadala ang work ethics nila na natutuhan sa Pilipinas, pasip-sipan pa rin.

I'm 36 and starting as well. I've got experience in a lot of related fields, but I'm still feeling like by 40 (hopefully) I'll still be able to do the job well.
