i am not a fan of writing papers, but i found english to be somewhat enjoyable. yes, we had to write a few papers. but it wasn't overwhelming.

bio was pretty fun. the lecture was a lot of memorizing, but lab was neat...looking at all the organisms and such (i assume you are doing an intro bio?)

psych, well that is my passion (and my second major) so i love those classes. a neat insight into the human mind. which psych class are you taking? intro or human development?

don't stress, you'll do awesome. study hard and do all your homework!

It will be OK and you will do fine! No worries - if you already knew the information then you wouldn't have to attend class, right? You're there to learn it! Don't even worry about looking over your books before class starts because that's all it will be good for....making you freak out.

In my English comp course, on the first day of class we DID have about 30-45 minutes to complete an essay on a certain topic, but it wasn't graded. Instead, for our final, she had us write another essay on the very same topic and gave us this original essay one week before the final. This way, we were allowed to prepare for our final essay, all the while seeing how much our writing improved from that essay we wrote on the first day.

You will be amazed at how much you're learning, even when you think you're not. My best advice is to relax!

I returned to school after 25 years to take nursing. I was so nervous and felt so out of it all. And I have to confess that it was a bit challenging to wake up my brain. But once you do...and you WILL...you will amaze yourself. Just know that it won't be easy at times (what is?) but at other times, I know you will actually have fun! Enjoy! [and be glad that you are only a little rusty, not 25 years rusty like I was !!]

I assume English Comp is the same as my Comp I class? I am taking comp online and it is available already. We have to write a total of 4 papers, I already know what on and to top it off, we have to get the topic cleared by the instructor. No clearance, you get a zero even if you wrote a darn good paper!

Anyway, our first paper isn't due until the later part of sept. So don't worry. Even if they do have you write something right off the bat, I doubt they will expect it to be done properly. It may be more of getting a feel for things and your writing style.

Try to hang in there. I just happened to see if my online courses were up yet and they were. I was a little overwhelmed at first, and there's only two courses listed so far. But after playing around and clicking on things, I feel a lot better. I also whipped out my planner and filled in the assignments and due dates for tests/quizzes. So now I can see much easier when things are due for what class. My SOC class has a calendar but the comp instructor did not put a calendar in (due dates are written out under the syllabus).

English comp won't be bad (far better than literature in my opinion--I hated nothing more than analyzing poetry!). I would say English was always my strong point, but everyone in my college English classes did just fine. Just figure out your professor/instructor's preferences in writing papers and read all the content that you get. In composition, you'll want to make strong points and have the proof to back up whatever you're trying to get across. I think that might be the hardest part. It's much better to come up with too much information than to be vague...and be sure to have a dictionary on hand. English professors/instructors are pretty bad about knocking of points for spelling errors. You should be fine--oh, and those APA style books worked like wonders for me! Good luck :)

Don't worry, you will do fine. I absolutely hate english, but I pulled off a B in the class. Most of the assignments were to write about something we read, or write something descriptive about a place we visited, time in our life, etc.

It was not as bad as I thought. Good luck to you.

Hey all!
Sorry this is going sound silly, but I'm officially freeking! I start school next Tues. ! Anyway~ I just got an email saying that I am now in the english comp. class (that I was on the waitlist for). I was nervous before, but now it's official. I'm so scared I'm going to walk in the first day, and they are going to say you have 30 min. to write an essay (or write anything for that matter):chair: . I haven't been in school in a long time, and when I was in HS I HATED english, and didn't pay attention. Honestly I'm clueless! Someone please tell me they aren't that mean. What should I expect? I am also taking psyc. and bio. I wasn't too concerned about those 2 untill I started looking at the book for bio. It's not comming back to me as fast as I thought it would. I haven't even cracked the psyc. book yet, maybe I should do that. Ok someone slap me and tell me it'll all work out and I'll be fine (right??? ). Thanks for letting me vent a bit, off to practice my deep breathing now !

I understand exactly how you feel. Last Spring was my first semester back after about 20 years, so I know exactly what you are going through. I think you will find that it isnt nearly as bad as you are now fearing. There are tutors, and they will explain how they want things done. You will do fine. I think as you get older, you know more what you want and you are more determined to get it right the second time. Some of the younger ones are much smarter than I was at their age and they are doing it right the first time. I like that.

Hey, Christin, don't worry. I too am in the same boat. I haven't been in school for 20 years and now I am starting LPN classes this next week. Yes, I am freaking out! I started my pre-req's this past Jan. and I am still trying to finish some up on top of taking nursing classes. I am taking english comp. online, then I need to take mircro. this Christmas. It also will be online. I am so worried that I won't do well in these two classes that I won't be accepted to the RN classes. I really want to be an RN, that I can feel it in my blood. I do believe that the only ways that I am able to go through with this decision is to put God first, then there is my sister she is also taking the nursing classes with me and I really wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for my families support. These three things are what I live on. I will pray for you Christin. As we all know deep down in our hearts we all need prayer.:welcome:

I loved/love English . . . .and I always have my nose in a book.

I hated/hate math . . . . that was my fear in school . . . the MATH MONSTER.

But I ended up doing fine and passed . . . you will be ok.

Hey, look on the bright side: Every other student in your class will be in the same boat as you are. I was worried about my classes until I got into them and realized that the "kids" in class really didn't care and most didn't do their work. As an adult I am in school because I want to learn, and because I want to learn, I do my work and study. It's amazing how well you do when you pay attention and do the work. You'll be fine!
