OHSU's Accelerated BSN 2015 cohort

Published

Hi there everyone. I didn't see a thread started yet, so I thought I would start one.

I am applying for the 2015 Accelerated BSN cohort (Portland campus) and am very nervous about the whole process with Nursing CAS and having transcripts sent to them.

I am also curious if anyone out there has an idea of what they are looking for and who will get interviews? It makes me nervous that there is no essay, so I assume that interviews will be based on grades alone. I have an undergraduate degree in Art History with a 3.64 GPA and a prereq GPA of 3.76 from PCC. Does anyone know if I even stand a chance? I have taken all of the prerequisites except for Micro, which I plan on taking in the winter.

It sounds like the interviews and no essays is a new thing? Does anyone know? Here's to hoping I at least get an interview!

I just got my email with an invite to an interview on the 5th a few days ago. I guess they don't send them all out on one day!

I was super surprised to get it, since they seem to base everything on GPA alone. My undergrad GPA was only like a 3.3 (nursingCAS decided it was more like a 3.4) overall I think I have a 3.56 according to nursingCAS. Anyway, I'm SUPER excited! Kinda stressed about the hours of interviewing and essays though. If anyone has tips please post them!

I have an interview for the ABSN Summer 2015 program a week from today, and I'm trying to prepare. Does anyone have any advice??!

Looking forward to meeting you! Have you figured out any advice? It's so hard to prepare without knowing what kinds of questions we'll be asked, but I guess that's the point-- they want to find out how much you genuinely know/care about being a nurse!

I posted a few ideas to practice with, a couple posts earlier! I would try to answer some of those questions in an hour and see how you do!

AH! Did everyone get the email saying that now the proctored essay portion is only an hour instead of an hour and a half? yikes! More practice this weekend :)

...I sure hope it's not handwritten. I plan to call the school on Monday to ask some clarifying questions - I'll make sure to include that detail and get back to you :)

Hey @elocinahtnamas - did you ever get through to anyone about whether this is handwritten or not?

I received an email from OHSU in response to my question about the essay. They said that the essay will not be handwritten. What a relief! Does anyone know if there are going to be 2 cohorts this year for the program?

Thank goodness!! Thank you for checking with them! I haven't been able to find any info about two cohorts. I hope so, because that means more of us will get in! :)

Sadly, I din't get an email about interviews this year but I was hoping someone would be willing to post a synopsis of their interview and their essay question once they go through it for me so I can know what to look forward to next year. Thanks and good luck to you all!

The past few years they have offered both a summer and fall cohort for the ABSN program. I haven't heard whether they'll be doing the same thing this year or not. I do know that last year there were approximately 36 spots in the summer cohort and 24 spots in the fall cohort.

My biggest questions now are how the group interview (with 5 prospective students) is going to be structured, and how many groups of 5 they'll be interviewing between the 2 days?

With a potential of 60ish spots to fill could they possibly interview that many people (12 groups of 5) and still have people left over to put on the waitlist? Perhaps they've chosen the people they're confident they want in the program and the interview and essay are just a safety net to eliminate anyone who truly doesn't perform well? Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Hmm...that's an interesting thought. I would be pretty confident in saying that the people moving on to the interview and essay are the ones that got through the application point, not the "left overs." They have 350+ applications each year, and then have to narrow it down by about a third to invite to the interviews (so, let's say between 100 and 150 people). THEN they narrow that down by half (or more) in order to fill up the summer and fall cohort, and the wait list. Who knows though...

So, any of you guys that went for your interview yesterday, how did it go? I'm feeling excited, not too nervous, but anxious to get through the day! I'm most worried about parking, to be honest. lol. Anyway, good luck to everyone today and I'm sure we'll all be catching up soon!

Hi All,

How did the interview process go for all ?
