Hi there everyone. I didn't see a thread started yet, so I thought I would start one.
I am applying for the 2015 Accelerated BSN cohort (Portland campus) and am very nervous about the whole process with Nursing CAS and having transcripts sent to them.
I am also curious if anyone out there has an idea of what they are looking for and who will get interviews? It makes me nervous that there is no essay, so I assume that interviews will be based on grades alone. I have an undergraduate degree in Art History with a 3.64 GPA and a prereq GPA of 3.76 from PCC. Does anyone know if I even stand a chance? I have taken all of the prerequisites except for Micro, which I plan on taking in the winter.
It sounds like the interviews and no essays is a new thing? Does anyone know? Here's to hoping I at least get an interview!
Hey @elocinahtnamas! I've been trying to look up typical prompts for the essay. I plan on getting two or three to try, and timing myself for an hour and a half to see what I come up with. I haven't had much luck finding scenarios or questions other than the standard, "why do you want to become a nurse? What qualities of yours do you think will prepare you for nursing?" Do you think we'll be handwriting these essays? (that's my assumption. handwriting an essay takes me SO MUCH LONGER than typing one!)
@ajw414 I've got the same game plan! I think because it's proctored, the essay will be pretty general. Why nursing/tell us about a time when.../etc. Last year their pre-written essay prompt was something along the lines of: You have a patient that is pregnant and a smoker. How do you navigate caring for this patient if you are morally opposed to smoking while pregnant. (That's not an eloquent recital on my part, but you get the gist).
I sure hope it's not handwritten. I plan to call the school on Monday to ask some clarifying questions - I'll make sure to include that detail and get back to you :)
I've seen that question somewhere on OHSU's website! I might try to answer that one on my own too, in addition to the general questions I wrote up there ^. I haven't had to write a persuasive essay explaining why I would do this or that in a while! Haha. Definitely let us know what they say about it being handwritten or not! I would be VERY happy if we had a computer to use. I move paragraphs and sentences around like crazy when I'm writing papers. It would be helpful if I didn't have to write 3 drafts in an hour and a half. lol.
Found it!! Okay, so here's what I found on OHSU's website for other essay questions they've used. I think this is for the campuses that have to submit an essay with their application, but maybe this will give us some ideas and practice.
Your personal and professional goals as they relate to your desire to enter the nursing profession. How can the OHSU School of Nursing help you achieve those goals?
What qualities do you have that would benefit the nursing profession and the patients/clients in your nursing practice?
Describe a situation(s) in which you have experience with diverse, underserved, and/or vulnerable populations. What did you learn that will influence your health care practice as a nurse? (This can include those who are marginalized in a given situation by gender, age, ethnicity, race, religion, economic status, geographic location, education, health status, disease, or disability).
You will also be asked these situational questions:
You have a bias against pregnant women who smoke. You have a patient who is pregnant and smoking. How do you reconcile your bias to care for this patient?
Please provide examples of leadership and accomplishments achieved through positions in school or community organizations; organization of activities to meet community needs; advocacy; letters to the editor; editorials.
Please provide examples of your commitment to Social Justice: Examples include actions, such as advocacy for social justice and volunteering or working to help underserved or vulnerable populations.

I just heard via email that I have an interview for March 6th! So relieved/excited/nervous! Now I am wondering what the group interview and proctored essay will be like!
