OHSU BSN 2016 Applicants

Published

Hey everyone! I am applying for OHSU BSN monmouth program this coming Fall for the 2016 school year! I would love to get a thread started :) It was so helpful last year! I will also be applying for Chemeketa this year.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Wow that's an awesome Prerequisite GPA. I did mine and I have a GPA of 3.67. I'm honestly shocked that I have an interview with that GPA. I always thought that I would have to have a 4.0 to even be considered. I must have done really well on the essay responses.

If you finished a and p and 45 prereqs credits you get tons of points, and there's also the discretionary points from experience, microbio and Chem. Gpa is important but if you can pull all the other points available it can be made up for.

That must be why then because i'm a CNA and I have completed all the prereqs including micro and the three chem courses.

i applied to ashland and havent heard anything :( have they sent out all letters? super bummed. a momma of two boys and worked my butt of to get here

I haven't seen any posts about new emails going out, but that doesn't mean they aren't. Also, some people are declining their slots to interview and the next people on the list will be contacted so don't give up hope just yet.

also, if you don't get in this cycle take a look at what you can do to be more competitve next one. Did you complete the whole a&p series? Did you finish all 45 prerequisite credits? Microbio? Chemistry? If your gpa isn't in the competitive range, see what classes you might be able to retake to bump it up a bit. If you're you don't have experience, consider volunteering or getting a job as a cna. If you are local to the rogue valley the job council across from rcc can help get you a cna license.

Hey guys, I am a 19 year old college student currently attending OSU. I applied to the Portland campus. I have a 4.0 in all my prerequisite work so far (although I won't be done until the end of this year). I have limited volunteer hours and no healthcare work experience. I haven't gotten an invitation to interview so I'm assuming I didn't make the cut. I'm pretty bummed! Congrats to everybody who got an invitation. I wish you guys all the best. Does anybody have any suggestions in order to make myself a more competitive applicant for next year?

How many of the prereq credits do you have completed? Do you have the whole anatomy series complete?

Best at advice I would say would be to finish the prereqs so you get the points and keep up the great gpa!

I would also suggest getting volunteer experience or a job as a CNA. That would really make you competitive, especially if you have a great GPA like you have right now.

OHSU has only seen my grades for the first term of A&P. A lot of my prerequisite work is still in progress. I'm thinking about get my CNA license this summer and work in a nursing home this summer.

You really need to have as many of your pre-reqs done as possible. I think if you just finish those off and get some CNA experience you should have no trouble getting an invite next year. Those seem to be the things that help people get to the interviews. Worksource helps people get their CNA license also. I know a lot of people that have gone through them.

Getting past the tier one selection phase for OCNE programs is all a points game. For example, this is the basic OCNE admissions points all OCNE schools use (I copied it from Clackamas' page but it explains the same formulas OHSU uses for their non-discretionary points):

Admission Points

• Prerequisite GPA 40 Points

o A maximum of 40 points will be awarded.

o The applicant must provide transcripts from each accredited college or university where prerequisite courses

were taken.

o A minimum of 30 quarter credits of prerequisites is needed to apply.

o Only the prerequisites (up to 45 quarter credits) will be calculated in the GPA for assignment of points in the

admission process.

o The most recent grade will be used for any repeated courses. Pluses and minuses will not be considered. Points

will be assigned using a linear equation: Points = 24*GPA - 56.

• Completion of A&P sequence 3-5 Points

o If the full sequence of A&P courses (I, II and III) has been completed with a grade of C or better, 5 points will

be awarded.

o If two courses (I and II, or I and III) in the A &P sequence have been completed, with a grade of C or better, 3

points will be awarded.

• Prior Degree 1 Point

o Applicants who hold a prior degree will be awarded a maximum of 1 point for having previously earned an

associate degree or higher. Include an official transcript for proof of prior degree.

• Completion of All Prerequisites 3-5 Points

o 5 points will be awarded if all 45 credits of prerequisites have been completed by the application deadline.

o 3 points will be awarded if at least 37 credits have been completed by the application deadline.

So if you apply with a 4.0, you've got a good 40 points, but if you only have the minimum 30 credits needed to apply you get 0 out of a possible 3-5 points for prereq credit points, and 0 out of 3-5 points for having two or more portions of the A&P sequence done. No AA degree drops another possible point, so out of a 51 point total, you're only starting off with 40.

OHSU does offer discretionary points for experience, but it doesn't seem to be dependent on being a licensed CNA, or if the work is paid or voluntary -- you could probably volunteer at the OHSU hospital or something in Portland for hours while continuing classes, so you don't have to use time in a CNA program you could be using to get more prerequisites completed for the standard OCNE points, or perhaps to take classes for OHSU discretionary points by completing microbiology or chemistry while you volunteer.

When I was at the practice interview I met a lot of applicants with similar coursework completed, who applied because their advisor told them this was when they could with pretty much the bare minimum required (30 credits with A&PI and Algebra), but considering the amount of points you miss out on, and how many people throw their name in the pot, I'd say it's probably better to hold off on applying to save yourself the $60 NursingCAS fee until you've maxed out on points first.

If you read this and recognize yourself being in this situation, don't get discouraged. You needed to finish your prereqs before the program would start anyway, so continue on the coursework you need to finish your prerequisites, keep up the GPA, and you'll be in a much more competitive state for the next years application cycle.

This is my first year applying and I've been invited to interview at the Portland campus. I have been spending a good amount of time preparing but I have never participated in a group interview before and have no idea what to expect. Heck, even my last job interview was 9 year ago!! Has anyone here been through the process before or have any tips or suggestion?
