Hi, I wanted to open this topic for anyone that applied to OHSU's ABSN or ABSN-DNP 2022 programs!

Hey! I’m a bit confused with the vaccination requirements, is the polio vaccine require?

I think on complio it explains what is needed when you click on each requirement. I couldn't track down my childhood vaccine records so I just went to my primary care doctor and got titer tests

Me too! I'm bummed about that because I really wanna connect with people before classes start. Do you already live in Portland or are you moving from somewhere else?

Im eager to connect with other students too. I noticed that the FB page was for "OHSU SoN new students 2021" I feel like they honestly gave us the wrong link to the old FB page. I found another one for 2022 and it has the same admin. Try requesting that one!

Hello current ABSN students (Portland specifically, but would love to hear from anyone)! I am hoping for insight on class schedules (generally, how many classroom hours per day/per week and how many hours/days/weeks for clinical), and hybrid (or online) vs in-person class formats. I'm trying to figure out whether/how I could commute to OHSU from another city (by plane) so that my kids can stay in their current location and schools, at least for my ABSN year. My big, wild hope is that OHSU might offer the flexibility for me to take as many courses as possible online so that I commute to Portland once a week (for a few consecutive days each week) for any classes/clinical training that must be in person. Or is it all mandatory in-person classes and clinicals 5 days/week?

Additional questions:

(1) Do you know any students who commute from far away who might be willing to speak with me about their experiences? If so, I can DM you and pass along my email address.

(2) Do you know whether there is any kind of priority enrollment or other flexibility for students with young children? I'm really hoping to condense my in-person attendance to 2 or 3 days each week so that I can mostly take classes online and maximize the days each week that I can see my kids.

(3) Are in-person clinicals typically every week of each semester, or are they condensed into portions of each semester?

(4) Are there clinical intensives where students need to be present in-person 5 days/week? Are there weekend clinicals during the MDE program?

(5) Any other general thoughts about the program that you'd like to share?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Hey. I'm currently in the ABSN program. It's pretty intensive and we are on the hill for classes at least 2 days a week and also in person for clinical or skills lab another 2 days a week, every week. I know that varies with each term though.  Most of my cohort struggled with the commute at first (busses, biking etc) and that was driving from close distances. No one lives far away as most people moved closer for school. I personally can't imagine commuting by plane with this schedule. From everything I know, they do not allow hybrid or online classes for certain people. Everyone attends class in person. If you are accepted, you're accepted into a certain cohort with a certain start date so registering for classes isn't an issue and there isn't a time urgency of getting into a class first because you are on a certain track with the rest of your cohort. Several of my classmates have children and seem to make it work well though. Based on my experience so far and what I have heard, clinicals are each week of the term for the most part. I would say if you're accepted and plan to go to OHSU, you have to really plan to give it your all and that takes a lot compromise! It's suuuper intensive!

Hi,

I would plan on being in person 4-5 days a week. We have multiple people who commute far and had to get another apartment in Portland because OHSU is  not flexible about doing things online.

My cohort is just about done with the program and I will tell you right now, don't bank on support from the school. They may say they support their students and "understand life gets busy" but they really don't. My cohort has been in a year long battle with the school because of how shitty they treated us. One example is the cohort right after us was offered free tuition as long as they worked at OHSU for 2 years following and we were not given the opportunity. Rely on your classmates, not the school.

good luck

@fuzzysocks02 and @Tl1234 thank you so much for your candid perspectives! I appreciate you taking the time to provide insight about the level of commitment and compromise required to succeed in this program!

Congrats! I was also accepted for the ABSN-FNP DNP program in Portland! I am so excited!! Do either of you know if anyone has started any groups (or anything along those lines) so that we can start to introduce ourselves to the cohort?

Hello, congratulations on your acceptance!! I am applying to 2023 cohort and just got interview invite. I'm excited but nervous because Im generally bad with interview. What should I expect for the interview? Was it long? Thank you!

Hello! Was anyone accepted for Fall or Summer 2022 cohort and  able to successfully defer to this year? I was just accepted for Fall 2023 cohort and due to new circumstances I won't be able to start until Summer, but would be happy to wait until Fall 2024 if needed. Any insight from previous students? Thank you!
