Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

thank you deltaroxxy2! I guess I should buy that book and start reviewing. Did you find it helpful??

Mine is seriously collecting dust. All you need is right here:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/10/

All of the instructors will lead you to this site as a reference. The TA I had in NURSE 300 was pretty detailed in her explanations, so I just noted what she told me regarding if/when my APA wasn't correct.

thanks so much...I really appreciate this advice!!!!

. . . ON the DARS topic, I email the registrared and voiced my complaint of no DARS, and they said they have it in paper form, just not entered into website - they are mailing it :)

I haven't gotten anything from OU yet - has anyone heard anything over the past couple of days?

Nothing, either!

Hello all, my name is Leslie. I am new to the site. I have to say thanks to chuckster for starting this thread. I too am interested in Ohio University's online program. I submitted my application today, hoping to start in the spring. I am glad I found this thread, because now I know I need to be patient with the whole process. ;) A couple questions:

1. Does anyone know if you need a Ohio license?

2. I know there are several classes that I need that I haven't taken yet, like statistics and chemistry. I think I saw something about how the statistics class needs to be 4 credit hours and not 3, or it may not count? My local community college offers Elementary statistics online, but it is only 3 credits. Also, does it matter which chemistry? they offer Into to Chem 104 Inorganic Chem, Chem 111 Organic Chem I, and Chem 211 College Chemistry. Do any of those count?

I am in the dark when it comes to all the credits and transfer stuff. I went to one community college and took all the credits necessary to get my ADN. But from the way yall are talking, the technicalities of class numbers and descriptions vary greatly between universities. There seems to be alot of grey area and debate regarding classes that should count, but don't, and so forth. I don't want to take any classes that will not count, but I did want to tackle a couple prereqs in the fall while I waited on Ohio State for the spring.

Based on the chart listed here:

http://www.outreach.ohio.edu/onlinecomplete/documents/BSN-Course_Descriptions.pdf

I need a chemistry, statistics, sociology, nutrition.

But at the very bottom of the page, it states,

"NOTE: These course descriptions are for the BSN degree only, they do not include electives."

So is this saying that I need more classes than the ones listed above? And if so, does someone have a link to a list? Their website is very confusing, and I am becoming frustrated already with my lack of knowledge on the college admissions/transfer process. I don't mind waiting, I just like to have a plan.

Any information given would be greatly appreciated.

I, too, am at a bit of a loss when it comes to what I will need. I am waiting to hear from them to let me know....I really want to go thru OU because of the cost so I will do whatever it takes. I'm in the same Associate Degree boat.......need chemistry, A & P II and stats for sure. Maybe even micro because I got a D in that one.....sucks!

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

OU seems to be reasonable tuition but with all the requirements and the postponement of start dates, it is becoming more costly.

Plus the stress of waiting for the starting info.

Still...these classes are half the cost plus the flexibility! Temple required specific log-on times with a webcam! Who can be that available??? I understand the frustration but I try to remain positive now that they are working on the summer session admissions. I believe this new "computer system" really screwed things up and they couldn't catch up with the demand. I needed just as much for Drexel......

Those already enrolled at OU, have any of you taken Community Health or Critique and Methodology? If so, how involved are these classes (lots of papers/quizzes/etc).

TIA :)

Hello all, my name is Leslie. . . . clip_image001.gifA couple questions:

No - an active RN license from any state is OK.

2. I know there are several classes that I need that I haven't taken yet, like statistics and chemistry. My understanding is that OU is on quarters, so a 3 credit course from a school using the standard 15 wk semester should be more than 4 quarter hours of credit (3 semester hours/2*3 = 4.5 qtr hrs).

It's good that you don't mind waiting because if what I and quite a few others went through is any guide, you'll be doing a lot of it. I found most of the info needed on the website but it's difficult and what I found was mostly by luck. Here's what I know.

The OU requirements are broken into 3 general-education levels - Tier 1, Tier and Tier 3. In addition, there are what's called "Lower Division Nursing" requirements that are met by your ADN and a number of BSN support courses. These BSN support courses include:

  • CHEM 121 Principles of Chemistry I
  • BIOS 130 Anatomy
  • BIOS 132 Physiology
  • PSY 101 General Psychology
  • SOC 101 Intro to Sociology
  • NUTR 128 Nutrition
  • PSY 273 Growth and Development
  • BIOS 221 Microbiology
  • PSY 120 Statistics

For the Tier 1 Gen Ed courses, you will need the following:

  • Freshman English (3 cr)
  • Quantitative Skills (3 cr - statistics meets this area)
  • Junior Level Composition ( 3 to 10 cr - must be a "300 level" or above advanced writing course)

The Tier 2 Gen Ed requirements are:

- Applied Science and Mathematics (6 cr)

- Cross-Cultural Perspectives (3 to 7 cr)

- Fine Arts (at least 6 cr)

- Humanities and Literature (at least 6 cr)

- Natural Sciences (4 cr)

- Social Sciences (at least 6 cr)

The Tier 3 requirement is the most straightforward: "General Education Tier III - Requirement is met when NRSE 455 is completed through Ohio University. If NRSE 455 is transferred in, a Tier III class must be taken." (quoted from the OU website).

The nursing courses consist of the following 12 courses for a total of 50 credits (all are 4 cr except tor Transistions and Community Health which are 5 cr):

- 1. NRSE 300 Transitions in Nursing

2. INRSE 310 Health Appraisal I

3. NRSE 325 Health Interventions in Nursing

4. NRSE 330 Family Nursing

5. NRSE 335 Legal & Ethical Reqts in Nursing

6. NRSE 341 Community Health

7. NRSE 405 Research: Critique & Methodology

8. NRSE 410 Gerontology

9. NRSE 414 Cultural Diversity in Nursing

10. NRSE 416 Management Issues in Nursing

11. NRSE 445 Strategic Planning in Nursing

12. NRSE 455 Excellence in Nursing

Hope this helps. I also found a number of videos that iy may be worthwhile for you to take a look at:

I read a post by "sandpiper1" that it was possible to test out of NRSE 310. Is this true, I thought we could test out of NRSE 325 not NRSE 310. Sandpiper1 if your out there I'd like to hear from you or anyone who as the correct information. Thanks from a fellow student!

It's been just about a week since this was posted:

Just wondering if anyone's gotten anything in the mail yet - I haven't. While I'd like to take OU at their word, it's hard to believe that they were truthful with stephparn when they told her this. If the DARS reports really were complete and ready to be mailed on 6 July it's hard to believe that we wouldn't have them by 12 July. There's also been nothing on the MyOhio or DARS websites - a week seems like more than enough time to enter the data there. Methinks we've mislead (again).
