Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Chuckster,

Can I ask you a couple of questions?

1. Where are you going to take those courses which are not offered online, such as: Elemetary Microbiology (BIOS 201), Introduction to Sociology (SOC 101), and Princles of Chemistry I (CHEM 121)?

2. What are you going to do with the courses that are involved with clinical parts?

I'm foreigned educated and I think I may have to take more courses than all of you guys. I just registered NRSE 300 which starts on July 25th. I got my book already but do not know where to start. Also, I applied UOW and still waiting for the admission letter, but the clinical that UOW requires is killing me if I'm accepted into their program. UTA requires me to take TSI because I graduated from other countries. SIGH....... so hard for me! At least, English is your first language. For me, sometimes I still have to use my dictionary to figure out what this or that means......

Any answers are greatly appreciated!

Cailian

I'm the wrong person for those questions since I've already taken pretty much everything in the course of earning an ADN, BA and MBA plus a couple of semesters in an engineering and later an info sys program - obviously completing neither. Though it will take some time to get the transcript eval from OU, I'm reasonably comfortable that all I have remaining are the nursing courses.

As to the clinical component, this is going to be a problem for me since I don't work in healthcare and I really haven't figured out how I'm going handle it. Thankfully, the clincal component seems to be limited to one course, NRSE 445 amd I'm hoping it will be possible for one of my clinical instructors from nursing school to help me satisfy this. Another course, NRSE 310 has a lab associated with it and I don't understand how this works either. Perhaps some folks who've already been through these classes can provide some info on how things worked for them.

Regarding sociology, stephparm has already posted a response - it's available on-line.

And by the way, your written English is great (I'm breaking a grammar rule here - you're not supposed to start sentences with prepositions); You should not be apologizing for it. Since we're on the subject though, I'll point out a minor mistake in your writing, one that many English speaking Americans make regularly. Your first sentence should begin with "May" not "Can". You use "Can" to inquire if it's physically or otherwise theoretically possible for you to do something and "May" when you're asking for permission. As my very picky elementary school English teacher always said in response to that particular improper useage: "Of course can CAN ask me a question - you just did - what you want to know is 'MAY' you ask a question". From what I can see though, it doesn't look like language is going to be much of a barrier for you.

Best of luck to you!

err, that should be "conjunctions, not "prepositions" . . .

Well, I emailed the registrar - and they kindly added the ability for me to register for fall quarter - so I am registered! :)

Anyone know any other place to take the stats class online?? It doesnt seem to be offered in the fall - Have no idea when in winter it will be offered (online completion)

Thanks for any help-

Hey...It's offered over semester. When you pull up the class offerings it's the very last one...Called Psy 120. Trust me, this is my 5th term w/OU and it's been offered everytime...

OK - I am in the ONLINE COMPLETION program and it only has 16 classes listed for fall - and I do NOT see stats anywhere :) Must have to wait til winter OR take it elsewhere.

Chuckster, you are such a great ESL teacher! your comments are not picky at all! I feel lucky that someone is pointing out my English grammer mistakes. I can learn more from this way......

Stephpharm, thank you for telling me that SOC 101 is available online. I'm still waiting for the DARS report to be done. I actually took many nursing courses through my nursing diploma and ASN in my country, but do not know how many credits will be accepted. I'll keep my fingers crossed and wish I have a good DARS report.

By the way, just received my Epic username and password from OU.

Oops....Missed that part...Was assuming that you were in the Academic Outreach, hence why I kept saying it's offered every term. Not sure how the online completion program works.

Cailian,

I have a bachelors, masters and associates - and my DARS is not done. In fact, it has NOTHING on it at all and I applied and sent transcripts in JANUARY! Just going to take the nursing and things I KNOW I will need while I wait.

IS there ANYONE here from Michigan that has already done 300 and could email me??? Thanks

Hi, guys! I think I need your help again.

I currently live in Illinois, but my RN license is from another state (NOT licensed in Illinois yet). The course NRSE 300 requires 2 books. I already bought the one published by ANA, but for the other one (The Legal Regulation and Standards of Nursing of your own state), should I obtain it from Illinois or the state I was originally licensed in?

Sometimes I feel lost by US different state's laws or rules. Maybe I should ask OU where to get it.

Many thanks in advance!

Cailian

All I used was the ANA book for nursing 300. The legal info was obtained from the Ohio Board of Nursing website. Since you live in Illinois and I assume practice there, just check out their board of nursing website. The class isn't so technical where they care about you being in 1 state with a license from another. All that matters is what obtains to the state you are currently practicing in.

For those of you who, like me, are planning to start the second summer session on 25 July and are waiting for a DARS report, check your CatMail. There was a message in mine this morning that provided what appears to be some helpful information regarding registering for class - I haven't registered yet and so can't comment on the utility of the info. The e-mail also contained this disappointing message:

If you are a new student starting this summer, please be aware that your transfer credit has not been completely added to your record. We are getting through them as quickly as possible and you will be emailed once your DARS is updated and reflects your transfer work. If you have not gotten an email about your Updated DARS, then it not been done yet.
The ability to wait patiently should be listed as a requirement for admission to the OU program.

By the way, I found that it is possible to access CatMail directly from the MyOhio site and you do not have to do it via Outlook (www.outlook.com) as implied in the info in the admission packet. Probably not news for many of you but it was for me.

Since all new students have to start off with NRSE 300, is it pertinent that you have your DARS report prior to starting?
