Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

I did some digging around on the OU website and, come to find out, there is an exam you can take to attempt to exempt the junior-level composition requirement:

http://www.ohio.edu/orientation/placement.cfm

I wonder if you can take this exam if you're a distance learning student (have it sent to a proctor) or if you have to take it on the Athens campus. If you have to take it there, I'm seriously considering making the 12-hour drive one weekend to do it. That's how bad I do not want to take a 300-level English class (waste of time).

Well according to OU they have over 300 e-mails to send out with a deadline of Monday. . . I was told to expect two seperate e-mails one with my PID and another from the school of nursing.
Since OU's problems with the computing system appear to be ongoing, I have my doubts about the new self-imposed deadline.

Has anyone heard anything yet this morning?

I received an admission confirmation email at 1130 this morning. It gave me a PID number and tells me to anticipate more information to follow....

Nothing here yet... It is good to hear that at least someone else received confirmation. Congrats Kelly!!!

Congratulations!

Looks like hollierncrrn and I are in the same boat, still waiting to hear from OU. Hopefully it's because they're doing things alphabetically and our surnames are nearer to "Z" than yours and not because of another computer system problem . . .

So nothing at all today from OU. This leaves only 4 working days until the beginning of the first summer session, making a wait to start the program until the next session all but mandatory.

Oh well, another day, another dissapointment from OU. Kind of becomming a familiar pattern.

I called this afternoon and was told to expect a message tomorrow (I'll believe it when I see it). Based on what I was told there is no reason I shouldn't get in. I was thinking I may go ahead and order my books. Can anyone who was already registered confirm the books I will need?

I've been attending OU since Jan 2011. I checked the class registration page and this is what is needed to Nursing Transitions:

NRSE 300

June 20

July 25

Transitions

American Nurse Association

2004, 2nd edition

Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice

ISBN: 9781558102828

I would suggest RENTING most books, but I would actually purchase this one. Seems to be used a bit in other classes.

Got this e-mail this morning.

Thank you for your application to the Ohio University Bachelor of Nursing major through eCampus! We have received your application and transcripts, and will be reviewing your documentation for admissibility. Due to a recent system change within Ohio University, we were unable to process as many applicants as anticipated for the June 20th start date. Consequently, your application will be moved to the July 25th start date within the summer term. You will be contacted via e-mail after an admission decision has been made.
It looks like Ohio University is doing everything possible to discourage me (and possibly others) from entering their program. A July start will mean that OU will have had my application for more than 7 months.

Chuckster ... you need to call them and ask if you are on the notification list - they will tell you. Yes - order the book for Transitions, I found it on Amazon cheaper than in the book store. Order the next book too - for the July class if you are taking Management Issues - the same book is used in Sept if you take Strategic Planning. That ISBN # is 9781416059844. I found it used on Amazon for around $38 + shipping. The book I am having trouble finding used is for Health Assessment - new edition in 2011 and it is running around $80.

Oops - sorry Chuckster, I didn't read your post completely. That blows -

Chuckster I am just baffled by all this run-around with you. 7 months is in excusable in my opinion. I don't know all your details of why but it's crazy! At least it looks like July could very well be your start date!
