Oh Help-discouraged!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hello fellow pre-nursing students.

i just returned from microbiology and lab, and am so discouraged! i am the slowest lab worker ever, as well as the older in the group, and i feel so incompetent. today we did gram staining and nothing really showed up on my slides. and i forgot my lab notebook-something that gets graded and has all prior lab info in it, so that didn't help.

anyway-it's like being in a foreign country. being in this lab. the lecture is certainly difficult too, but am more comfortable there. a&p i is better, even. god i just worry i'll never get it. it's so foreign to me. i mean give me poli-sci or sociology or literature or psych anytime! ugh!

i am, however, determined to get into nursing program-i guess i just need a bit of mental support :wink2: going through a divorce too-down to my last $100 bucks and have a 13 year-old daughter (she's awesome, but the teen thing, you know)i do have a great attorney though...

anyway-oops bit of extra info there-but out it came. i can do this lab thing! sure i can!

right?:uhoh21:

thanks everyone, for reading

I enjoyed micro....it wasn't all that bad except the part where I learned that I need to find gloves like Michael Jackson now that I know any surface where people use their hands (stair rails, door knobs, light switches, etc) are disgustingly covered with cooties!!

Truly take the time to try to enjoy the class...you will use some of the material as you transition to your NS classes!!

Hi all,

Know exactly how you feel. I am in organic chem with all 18 year olds. I am by far the oldest in the class. We had lab and nobody wanted to be my partner. The good news is when you reach your 40's you don't care :) Anyway, they all sit and talk about the dorms and this and that. I talked to the instructor after the class. She said it is an unusual dynamic, that in most of the classes she is seeing a mix in ages of students. I am taking organic chemistry, microbiology and A&P 2 this semester. Yes, three sciences!!! I have no science background. I got a 98 on my A&P test yesterday. Did I mention I have 3 sons ages 7-12? I am off to the library in a few minutes to study for my lab test. Folks, if I can do it anyone can!!!! I just really sat down and made my mind up to do this. I used a tutor for intro chem in the summer session. AND I got an "A" in A&P 101 in the summer. Good luck to all of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Know exactly how you feel,am there right now only thing its with the math.Hope i pass this time round.Best of luck to you.

Micro was my hardest class so far (I am in my second semester of nursing classes). I pulled an A but it was a full-time job to do it. Don't beat yourself up! Check into tutoring, branch out and form a study group, go over your labs before you get there so you know what you are doing, etc. And organize your stuff the night before! ;)

GL!

Micro will change the way you look at your world, that's for sure...my son took swimming lessons this summer and we were at the pool almost daily...I was so much more concious of NEVER letting pool water touch my lips and had a discussion with my son NOT to swallow any....well, one afternoon someone pooped in the pool...you can imgagine what went through my mind since we had to do a pond water sample in lab and figure out how badly contamminated the water was.... WE WERE OUTTA THERE QUICK that day LOL

I haven't taken micro yet, but the microscope stuff is really challenging for me. I have so much respect for those people who choose to make a career at looking at it all the time!

I was the exact same! I couldn't see any of my slides. We had to do a gram stain, capsule stain, simple stain, and a spore stain and I couldn't see anything!! I was worried and thought i'd fail lab, but staining is really only a small part of lab and the rest of the stuff was easier to do. And for the practical and final we didn't have to do any staining ourselves, just be able to identify what was stained. So maybe you'll have that too.

Don't get discouraged! Staining can be hard! It'll get better!

I didn't see any of my stains and I still got an A in lab and in lecture! You can do it!

I do undertsand to the fullest (especially the financial situation)!!! I wasn't the oldest in my class even though I'm 28 w/ a 10 yr. old(will be 29 soon). But it was all foreign to me and even the other sciences too but I managed to get A's & B's. I end up getting a C in micro & I was disappointed at first but I had come to realize that I worked hard & I can't beat myself up over it. There were people in the class failing and I could have been one of them. I'll just work harder. So don't be discouraged...be encouraged! Stay motivated & it'll work out!:wink2:

oh yay! every time i peek at this there are more words of encouragement and someone in a similar circumstance! so helpful! still not feeling good about micro-it is hard. i do hope things get a little better after staining! although i did get an a on my first quiz-and she only gives 5 questions. five out of how many things you need to know!!!??? so i was glad for that. and had my first a&p lab exam today and guess what? i got a 101%!!!!!!! could not believe it!

then i drove intown to sell my diamond so i can pay rent. oh well! life has it's ups and downs, doesn't it?

next exam: first one for a&p lecture on thursday-wish me luck!! (different professor)

and thank you all again for your unending words of encouragement!!!!

congrats on that awesome grade!!!!

as for the diamond....sorry to hear that you had to sell it but think, once you become a nurse and make that big paycheck you can get a new one...a bigger one :wink2: things are just things.

keep up the good work

in lab we had a 10 question quizz each week, they all added up to one test grade....they were hard as hell..in my chem class we had 5 question quizzes that were also hard as hell and weighed alot towards the grade. you are doing great.
