TEAS 88.2

Pre-Req GPA 3.4

Nothing done yet - no physical, no uniforms, no CPR nothing!!! Anyone want to do CPR together if possible?? Also, who wants to help me get together ~$1500 in the next 6w so I can pay for classes, books and the first month of $600/mo daycare?? :crying2: Ahhhhhh!!!

Don't buy any books yet...I spoke with S.Y. in the Nursing Office and she said that those two packages for Fundamentals are deeply discounted from the publishers to the bookstore since we have to get so many items for class (thus we get a discount). Also, some of those items, probably the DVD's and computer software are only available from the publisher. I checked Amazon and Barnes and Nobles and they are much more pricey for the few individual items they have from the list. Not to mention, S.Y. said the books will not even be available for another couple weeks. She suggested waiting until after orientation. Sucks for us geeky folks who wanted to spend our beautiful summer inside reading about care plans...Ha!! Also, just found out from allheart that my stethoscope won't be in for another 2-3 weeks. I did get my 2 uniforms, patches, scissors, hemostat, pinlight, and shoes though :). And my arms are sore from getting my blood draw for the MMRV titer, the TB skin test, and a Tdp booster. A necessary pain though, right?

I got my TB test on Monday and it looks good. Plus it was free. The benefits of working for a doctor's office :)

If you search the isbns, all books are available--just not at phcc's book store, which is what I am sure the person meant :)--the eBooks are another story entirely. Additionally, college bookstores are well known for charging darn close to full retail, and for me, it is worth it to go ahead and buy as many materials as I can so I can get started (I am the Queen of Geekdom...lol)--I am MOST impatient, and the thought of waiting until August to buy my books is utterly ludicrous--I know myself well and I know it will give me great comfort to dig in ASAP. PLUS, if you buy online, there are lots of free shipping deals, the options of used books, and potentially--sales tax free for some retailers.

So, I guess, we all need to weigh our own sets of pros and cons, and make the decisions that best fit our individual needs :)

Now that I've said all of that, are there prices listed on the sheets in the ever elusive packet? If so, does anyone want to share them? If you prefer, feel free to pm me :)

Edited to add:

Please read the above with a lighthearted, happy and enthusiastic tone! lol

The packet does not list prices. IF you decide the order them NOT from the bookstore, I'd recommend Amazon. Barnes and Nobles were REALLY steep. I will be patient until the packages for the bookstore come in. S.Y. has been polite and straight with me so far, so if she says they are going to be cheaper as a package deal from the publisher to PHCC, I'll take her word. Plus, you should make sure they sell some items individually if you can't find them retail. That way you won't be stuck either missing a book/manual or having to buy the package for one item you couldn't get elsewhere. I have enough to keep me busy until then with all the health forms and supplies we'll need. I agree campus bookstores normally charge an arm, leg, and firstborn for somethings you can get elsewhere, but they were pretty good about my Microbiology materials and Landau Uniform sets. Regardless, if you wanna read up, go for it! May wanna email the instructor for a syllabus so you know where to begin and don't get off-track. Good luck!! :)

If I am wrong and I screw myself over in any way by purchasing my materials prior to orientation, I shall blame no-one but myself, and I promise that I won't complain about what an idiot I am :) lol

:lol2:

I too have purchased most of my supplies, almost all of them with some sort of discount. For my books, I have comparison shopped and used many borders coupons!

Hey everyone....Just dropping in. I wanted to say a few things. Our uniforms only have one patch on them. The second is on your lab coat which you wont need till second semester. Books are a racket. PHCC orders special bundles so the isbn numbers wont match. Walk into the book store and write down the number off of each book in the packet. Most packets include the study guide (which I never used) and an evolve password (which I never used). Some find that stuff helpful, but not me so choose what you think will work for you. As far as buying books from students. You would have to get graduating students, because you need all the books for each new semester. Then they add more. I have a closet full. What else....oh typos get use to that all the materials have typos and poor grammar. Even some of the nursing books. East campus instructors are great. They are polar opposites....one easy going and one strict... you will learn a great deal from each. They are both very easily distracted. Pasco Regional is a paper hospital while FHZ is computer based (my preference). Take care!

Sam4cnm...thanks for the input! Greatly needed and appreciated! I'll be on East Campus, so I look forward to each. Question about the books...if the study guides and "Pageburst ebooks" are NOT required, then we should be fine going with what some people are doing and ordering the individual books (minus course manuals and lab kit) off amazon, right??? Also saw a DVD on there? In your opinion, would it be cheaper/better to buy all the items as a package from the bookstore (claiming they get a discount), or just go with individual items?

Oh...additional note....course manual is from the bookstore...it also contains the syllabus. In my original packet I got when I start NS last year I got a price list of total costs...no individual book cost. Though I remember the total being something like $730 for books. That is only like $50 less than tuition. First semester was the most expensive since you start with nothing....it gets a little better. Less books, manuals, supplies to purchase once you start.

I personally got the packets when I started since I wasn't sure what I would need to succeed. After the first semester I got the books individually based on what I knew I would need. So get what you thinks works for you.

Thanks for the great info sam4cnm!

My packet is here! And my major has finally been changed in WISE. Whew!

I've heard, that if you don't purchase anything else in advance (r/t books), get the syllabus and look it over. Get a good planner and start putting in dates/deadlines/etc. If there are any research papers due, that you can begin researching topics for, then do it.

Can't wait to begin putting names with faces!

Have any LPN students received their packet yet? I haven't gotten mine and its making me super nervous. However, my major in wise is changed. I just want my packet already :(
