ODS Questions

Published

So I'm currently sitting here about to start week 3 of ODS in Rhode Island. I just wanted to start a thread for anyone who has questions to go on and start posting them. I'll check back here whenever I can and answer what I can. I can also give an overall thoughts and whatnot after I finish April 8th. So without further ado...fire away!

You get divided up into 3 groups based on your in-pfa run time. Since we only have our chief and one CO PT'ing in the am with us the medium group gets split between the fast and slow groups. I have no idea what pace we are holding in the fast group since that's where I keep getting stuck.

Ok, I lied, I have one more question.

You probably don't know, but can I bring my Kindle to read with during the first few weeks, or is it physical books only?

Thanks.

Been reading my Kindle every night for a few minutes while lying in bed to unwind. They never said we couldn't have that. Just cell phones were labeled "contraband". Just keep it stowed in the bottom drawer in your locker. That way no one can pull the doors away and get to it.

Thanks for the ODS tips! I'm looking to join the Navy Nurse Corps, and with all the waitlisting, I might not even be able to go until 2012-2013, IF i get in. :p so this thread has been very helpful in terms of what I should expect.

are we allowed to bring laptops? i'm wondering how you're able to access the Internet, or if there's a place on campus where you have Internet access.

We received a username/password to the internet in our building. It's very restricted though. No social networks or personal email. They are all blocked. There is an internet cafe where you can get on any website...except craig'slist...but you don't get liberty there until after a few weeks. So....yeah. That's how I've been getting online. 3 weeks down! 2 more!

Just got accpeted today into NCP. Final paperwork should be here next week. How does the process work after you hear from the board?

ODS Graduates,

I will be going to ODS this JUL or AUG. I was wondering, how much time do you have between ODS graduation and when you report to your first duty station?

Also, I have read that it helps to get your HHG packed and shipped (I am assuming to my first duty station) prior to leaving for ODS. Does my local recuiting station help me with logistics or am I on my on?

They expect you will go directly from ODS to your first duty station. It is strongly recommended to have you HHG packed and shipped prior to school. Many in our class didn't have it done prior to. It's not impossible to do later, just one more thing to stress over when you report!

You should get a sponsor at your first duty station for you to speak to prior to reporting. They can be helpful (as long as you get one!). Anything more than the allotted travel days should be discussed with your new command as many have classes starting immediately.

Thank you for the incite. You defiantly cleared up some thing for me.

Anytime, if ya have more questions....don't be afraid to ask! Go with an open mind and the knowledge that it's all about keeping you guessing and teaching you the navy way. Team work is a MUST. The sooner your class figures it out and works together the better off you will be!
