OCVTS Toms River 2011 Class

U.S.A. New Jersey

Hello Everyone!

So is anyone here registered for the September 2011 class at Ocean County Votech for the LPN Program? I am, and I have to admit that I'm a little nervous. I've heard how difficult it is, but feel that if I'm dedicated and want it enough, there's no reason why I can't do it.

Yes, Manda912 I have taken all the necessary pre-requisites for the RN program the only thing that I need to do is take the TEAS exam. Before starting this LPN program I finish taking up Microbiology with ***** @ OCC and I definitely would recommend her. I hope that after graduating this program there will be an LPN bridge to RN so it will only be a one year in counting to receive my A.D.N. & continue with Kean for my B.S.N. Hopefully with God's blessing I would like to pursue for my Ph.D.

In order to achieve anything in life you must work hard, never give up, & believe in yourself!

XSHELLZX......That is awesome! Good for you. So at least you have some knowledge of the classroom work. I hope to carry on to RN as well, but just working on getting through this first...lol. We wear our scrubs the first day right?

mom-and-student......So you have completed this LPN program at OCVTS? If so what did you think and any advice or pointers for us newbies ?? :)

i graduated in october 2006. it was the most difficult program i have ever been to. that being said, i received an excellent education that serves me well to this day. i currently have my bsn and am in the process of studying for the certified emergency nurse exam. these instructors are super tough but they are the best teachers there are. do not show up late to clinicals with a cup of coffee you purchased on your way there. and wear white underwear to clinicals, trust me on this one. you will be sent home. as far as studying goes, don't fall behind. it is the best nursing program bar none. congrats on getting in. make the most of it.

Do you know if Group A instructors allow recorders? I appreciate all of your advice as well. Thank you!

Many of the instructors do not permit recorders due to the potential for confidentiality issues. But getting caught recording when specifically told not to is grounds for disciplinary action.

i suggest using different colored inks also. i wrote in different ink or made notes in red, green, etc to let myself know something was important. a notebook with multiple sections is great. you will be taking many notes. the instructors go very fast so try to develop a shorthand of sorts. highlight your book. i still use my medsurg book because its more concise than the rn texts. invest in a good med calc book. i still refer to mine. you will take a med calc test every time you start a job. invest in a care plan book. now that back to school supplies are out, buy a ton of index cards. i cannot tell you how many i had by graduation. a couple of hundred probably. they make you write med cards. i suggest writing your own med cards and not buying premade cards. the information sticks better. use red ink to note critical values or information. you will use this information throughout your career, so establish good practice now.

as far as books go, buy cheap used books. you don't need expensive new additions. these books don't come with your textbooks.

here are links for the best books i have found:

please don't be discouraged by the amount of people dropping out or failing out. all nursing programs have a high drop rate. the instructors will scare you the first days but by the end you will love them.

good luck. i am glad everyday that i went to the ocvts. it changed my life for the better.
