OCC - 2010 applicants / 2011 ADN prospective students

Hey everyone! Im back for my second application into the ADN program at OCC ::sigh:: As I did in the thread I created last year, I am creating a new one for all those applying to the nursing progam for next fall. Lets keep in touch and keep one another updated. Good luck guys!!! :)

Im in the morning class! So, should we expect to get our clinical/lab schedule at orientation next week?

I wish there was a way I could know who is who on Tuesday so we could meet each other and maybe form some study groups. Kinda weird though cause then we will no longer be anonymous. lol

Also, did anyone else look at the ridiculously long book list on the Bokstore website for our Foundations class? Oh no! Do we really need all those books????

there's like 10 books!!!! I bought 6 of them online and it seems like the others are new editions because I can't find them anywhere online!

With the books that I can't find online that's almost 700 dollars just on books! That's a lot of money!

guys.......here's a simple rule to follow....if it says optional dont buy it unless youve got the money to blow.

the books they are saying are required i would get except the med surg book pkg and psych book. i would ask your fundamentals teacher before buying that.

the lab and diagnostic book i have never used in my whole first year

cyclopedia/dictionary. never used if you need to look something up you can use your terminology book if you have one otherwise you can look it up on the internet

pharm book you already have

nclex......you will eventually need it but probably not for foundations

the psych book says its required but i never opened mine

if you need to buy the med surg and psych books you can always buy them later

the truth is that some people will not make it out of fundamentals (i know its not cool to say but it is a reality)

and if you buy everything on that list you may be blowing money you dont have or could use somewhere else.

this program is famous for nickel and dime expenses throughout.

another bit of advice, if your a visual learner look for books that help you, they sell them in the bookstore

if your an auditory learner get a really good digital voice recorder. if you learn by reading. congrats, you will get to read over and over and over again.

another bit of advice, there is a meeting on how to pass this course you will be taking. they will show you new study techniques. if you think these tech's will work for you by all means use them, if not don't. i switched the way i studied for this class and struggled the next 2 tests after that meeting.

I would just recommend to get

Main textbook for foundation

Nursing diagnosis handbook

NANDA

NIC

NOC

It's sad but it's truth about lossing people. We, LPN, have lost 10 so far from 32.

Lost 3 in foundation- 1. Failed exam along the way 2. Failed performing at the clinical 3. Failed the cumulative grade after final.

I love OCC nursing school but no sugar coating from anyone when you aren't meant to be one.

Good luck everyone on the very first nursing class. I'm going on with my first med Surg. Yay!

Monday am class for me too! Just curious, out of so many books on the list which one is going to be the main text book for the foundation? Last year they used fundamentals of nursing. I don't see that book on our list. :confused:

They change the book this year. I assume that it's the most expensive one on the bookstore site which I haven't chance to take a look yet. They said they would changed it to Med Surg book which we can use for more classes. They also got rid of prep points also.

so at the orientation one faculty member mentioned that she had 20 books on her iphone and allowed students to take tech gadgets to clinicals as long as they were used for reference only....

anyone plan on getting their books on an iphone or Kindle-like device? I wonder if most/all of the books can be purchased digitally...

Any advice would help...Ive not gotten digital books before, nor do I have an ebook reader or iphone, but am considering it (depending on how many books have digital options.)

the iphone does not have many textbooks to choose from, they do have the basics like davis drug guide, NCLEX review quizzes e.t.c, if your using it for school purposes to buy textbooks, they are not useful at all because these types of gadgets are not for textbooks. you can go on itunes and check out the books that they have. however, with the iphone, I must admit, there are some amazing apps on there for NCLEX. I noticed in pharmacology, some of the questions on the test were very similar to the app. when the teacher mentioned the use of gadgets, I believe she was referring specifically to tape recorders since there is apps to tape lectures on the iphone or ipod.

here's the thing about using your iphone or other devices for your clinicals. even if you get the simplest app like davis drug giude. while your in clinicals your instructors (especially in med surg) will ask you to pretty much know the drugs your looking at. most hospital computers (which your allowed to use) have a drug guide built in to them so when your looking up a med you can do it right there. for fundamentals you will not be doing any drug passing so you wont need to know your meds. in OB you will only have a couple different meds to pass and Psych your not allowed to pass meds. i have an iphone and i did buy the davis drug guide, and have used it a couple times but not worth the money. the cost of the book. i ended up buying the book anyway, so i paid for it twice.:crying2:

if you have money to burn then i would get only the davis guide, forget the dictionary, ive never used mine. your text books your going to be using a lot and need to flip back and forth and flagging pages.

of course its up to you but as someone whos gone through first year, i wouldnt spend the money.

ps in med surg you can carry your davis drug guide with you to look up meds if you need too anyway.
